195895 2003-11-30 16:14:00 I have Pentium(r) 2 IE5 with 192 Mb ROM and BIOSv4.5IPG and 40Gb HDD. I use Photoshop with Win XP home. When files became 25 Mb with lots of leyers system started to slow down and stamble.
Will it help to add ROMs? Tried to add 256Mb card, but system aknowledged only up to 317Mb. Any ideas?

195896 2003-11-30 18:32:00 well the reason it only recognizes half the RAM you added is that you need to add 'double sided' RAM.......being an older system that's what you need to do.........anyway,..............192 megs ram is plenty really.......have you defragged the system recently ?...........also run scandisk........ drcspy (146)
195897 2003-11-30 18:34:00 hm.........then again.........XP uses plenty of RAM...........so more wont hurt........what speed is the processor ? drcspy (146)
195898 2003-11-30 21:44:00 Processor is 450Mhz. Any idea how can I learn from "Task manager" what is happening ? What is "Page file usage"?
Thanks, regards.

195899 2003-11-30 23:01:00 basicly your trying to run $1000 worth of the latest software on an old machine which is really only setup for win9x/me.

first thing is to increase ram to the max that board can run. most likly you will need to use double sided ram. both XP and photoshop will use every bit of ram you can squeeze into it.

failing that either downgrade it to win9x/me or upgrade the whole pc.

page file is the same as virtual memory aka what windows uses when you run out of ram. unfortunatly virtual memory runs a lot slower as it runs off the hardrive so you get a slowdown.

195901 2003-12-02 09:37:00 Photoshop uses its own pagefile, swapdisk or what ever you want to call it...
photoshop calls it a scratch disk...

edit > prefferances > plugin's and scratch disks...

have a look see...

later...
