196045 2003-12-01 09:20:00 Was reading an article on The Register (I think ) that said if you do a search for "Linux" you get about 478 pages but with Google you get about 50mil. mikebartnz (21)

Just tried that:

A basic MSN search returns this: Results 1-15 of about 475 containing "linux"
An advanced MSN search returns this: Results 1-15 of about 14757209 containing "linux".

It is more of a case of knowing how a search engine works and how to get the best out of it. :)

196047 2003-12-01 10:16:00 A little bit of maths. That 14mil is still way short of the 50 odd mil on google. mikebartnz (21)

Eat this, from Google: Searched the web for Linux. Results 1 - 10 of about 96,500,000. Search took 0.10 seconds. ;)

196049 2003-12-01 10:42:00 That is almost 7 times the msn results. I had not actually tried it but was going by the article. The big thing in the article was that the msn site rated migrating from Linux to MS as #3 which has now changed. Also the USA and UK MSN sites gave different results mikebartnz (21)
196050 2003-12-02 04:32:00 Of course the huge numbers discovered don't mean anything. The entries at the bottom end are references to "not very relevant" pages.

I have to be keen to look past the first two or three pages of links. Normally, I am adjusting the search keys by then.

MSN is probably not bad. It's just that Google is better. :D

196051 2003-12-02 07:01:00 Did you ever think the fault might have been in you putting a fullstop a space after the domain? ("www.microsoft.com .")
Google would have said the same if it was your default search engine so it's pointless complaining about it.
