Back ground info:

have a friend who runs a shop and has a call ID system hooked to his PC using "power phone" (dont ask)

power phone links to outlook contacts.

when the phone rings the call ID is read by power phone and it then pops up outlook with the conect info of who's calling. the problem is that the system is getting very slow, it takes about a minute to bring up to info. I assume that this might be to do with the fact that he has 2500 contacts :-)



Question:

is there a way to make outlook re-bulid the database to run faster? like compress it or such like. like fast find does.....

the other question is what would be the best way to make the system faster (for cheep).

the system is a K6II 350Mhz with win98se and only 64Mb of ram.

I am thinking more ram and a refresh of windows.

any option that will cost more than $100 is out. 		robsonde (120)

if they are using MS Outlook (not Outlook Express):

1. Delete all the items in the SENT ITEMS folder

2. Click on TOOLS | "Empty Deleted Items folder"

3. Right click on the "Outlook Today" object and select "Properties". Under the properties click "Advanced". Under advanced select Tick the option "Allow upgrade to large tables" (if available) and then click on the "Compact now"option. This will tidy up the Outlook PST file and resize/compress the file.

See if that helps.

this compact thing you speek of...??.... will that do the contact list too?

The contacts list in MS Outlook (not Outlook Express) is kept as a folder within the PST file. So compacting ('compressing') the pst file will help.

196622 2003-12-03 02:07:00 Upgrade the RAM. 64Mb is minimal, especially if something is hooking into Outlook.

Go for 256Mb at least.

If it's Outlook Express, the address book is usually a file \Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\xxxxxx.wab

I don't see any way to compress or re-index it. Maybe exporting the whole lot and reimporting could work. 		antmannz (28)
