196490 2003-12-02 07:40:00 I just bought a new V92 external modem made by Web Excel. There was nothing wrong with my old one but it was just flex type and would only ever connect at 49000 approx, seen by mousing over green things in toolbar. I expected my new one to connect at 56000 or more and it does, every second dial up, each other time it connects at 28000. What can be wrong? I have re installed it on two O/S and also tried drivers other than the ones it came with. I think I am going to take it back.
Please help.
Regards Rob.

196491 2003-12-02 07:50:00 Is it serial of USB?

If USB how fast is your processor?
bmason (508)
196492 2003-12-03 04:15:00 It is a serial external modem so I thought that meant that the processor speed is not important. Certainly on my last external modem the processor usge dropped by 15% when I switched from internal PCI modem. The shop gave me a US Robotics external modem to try out and it is driving my computer mad. Blue screen of death, fatal exceptions etc. It was not detected so I had to set it up manually. My comp says it is there but must be configured so I tried that and I do know what I am doing, no connection even though modem is present. I have switched back to my old PCI modem and no problems evident except cpu usage is high then I went back to the Genius external modem, no problems but slower so then I retried the US robotiscs again, no good.
I think I will just take both modems back to the shop and get my money back. I have wasted enough time on this. I have never had any trouble installing modems before.

196493 2003-12-03 04:56:00 Didn't pick up what operating system you are running, but....

If you get into device manager and open up the "ports (com&lpt)" , then right click on the serial port you use and select properties. Now click on the "port settings" and select 115200 from the drop=down list. Make sure other settings are :=
8 bits no parity 1 stop bit hardware flow control

See how that goes on your Genius External.

196494 2003-12-03 05:43:00 I have Win 98SE and Win2000Pro on separate partitions on the hard drive, both o/s exhibiting the same problem, that is variable connection speed sometimes 56000, sometimes 28000. The genius flex works well at 49000, never connects at 56000 or higher because it is just a flex modem not V90. My new Web Excel V90 is the problem. I have just been down to the shop and got another one I am using it now. Too soon to tell if the problem is resolved. zqwerty (97)
196495 2003-12-03 05:52:00 DOH... sorry zqwerty, I must of had a brain fade. I meant your new external, not the genius.

If you can find your way to the device manager, you will find that standard/default setting is 9600 , which can restrict the info flow between the modem and your computer. The 115200 is the maximum that the serial port can do, so eliminating it from any constricting effects.

196496 2003-12-03 06:13:00 >>... would only ever connect at 49000 approx, seen by mousing over green things in toolbar. I expected my new one to connect at 56000 or more...

The connection speed with dial up modems is what the line speed is initially negotiated at, and will change. It is possible that the 49k connection drops, and conversely, the 28k conection speed increases after a while.

49000 is acceptable, and higher than most dial up connection speeds .. you will never get sustained true 56000.

196497 2003-12-03 06:28:00 Here is an example of the same problem with the modem I have just got. So this is the second faulty one if indeed it is the modem.
This is from the modem log.

Every second time it will connect at 115200
What do you think? I might send a copy of a good and bad connection to Clearnet who are my ISP. I understand about the port settings and they have all been done.
Thanks for the help so far.

196498 2003-12-03 07:02:00 Have you had telecom check out your phone line?

If you want then you can install the FAX program which came with your modem and send a FAX to 0800 108 208 and leave the FAX sitting on receive.

You should get a fax back with info that may help.

When I was using dial up I had to (twice) have the phone connection plugs replaced in my house.

Try a search for "Line noise" for more info.

It is unlikely that all these modems are faulty.

196499 2003-12-03 07:13:00 I am swopping between my two o/s and it looks as if I am getting 100% 115200 connection on Win98SE but Win2000 is still dodgy. Every second time I dial it gets the wrong speed. Notice the text in the log about a response from Clearnet not being correct. Remember that there is absolutely no change in hardware when I change between the two o/s's. I am on Win98SE now and I cannot make it connect wrongly. Oh well back to Win2000 again. zqwerty (97)
