196433 2003-12-02 04:08:00 As root, do /sbin/lilo -u .That should fix it. Just make sure that you have done mkbootdisk (and that the floppy works first). (Of course, Lilo will let you make Windows the default OS if you want to). Graham L (2)
196434 2003-12-02 04:31:00 or, more simply, you could boot into dos and type fdisk /mbr Wilky (776)
196435 2003-12-02 07:53:00 um.. for some reason if i use the bootdisk i made with mkbootdisk
when i startx, the xwindows seem to run at the wrong resolution
but if i use the hd to boot again it goes back to the correct resolution

what is wrong? resolution information shouldn't be on the boodisk...why is it doing this...werid..

196436 2003-12-02 08:04:00 I am not sure why you would want to boot from a floppy - floppies wear out, get lost and are very slow to boot from!

Do you have LILO set up to boot both Linux and Windows? If not, there are plenty of people in PUSHF1 who can help here.

196438 2003-12-02 09:48:00 OK - so why not reverse the order of the boot loaders (assuming you are using Win2k or XP). Uninstall LILO from the mbr as shown above and reinstall it to the root partition of Linux - change the top line from boot=/dev/hda to boot=/dev/hdax where x is the root Linux partition. Rewrite LILO with /sbin/lilo.

Then refer to a site like: daniel.jorgensen.no to find out how to modify the Windows boot.ini file. Knock the timeout back to say 2 seconds and nobody will notice anything different.

196439 2003-12-02 09:51:00 Two things here:
Setup whatever Boot-Loader you're using to timeout after 10 seconds, defaulting to Windows.

Secondly:
I hate LiLo, GRUB is Much better IMHO. Chances are it was installed but not "installed" into the MBR.

See the Gentoo linux help for setting it up:
www.gentoo.org
Its about 4/5 the way down.... it says:

It'll also tell you how to setup LiLo should you choose to keep it :-)

Its not hard to setup the Boot Loader to choose the OS after 2 seconds.. I kept Linux hidden on the Famly's PC for about 3 months before they noticed the boot-loader and questioned me about it ;-)

Hope this helps
