197423 2003-12-04 23:18:00 Hi, just now we got a HUB to use on our network .

before we had the HUB we had a crossover cable and the network worked fine . But now we got the hub and the cat5e patch cables etc etc, it does not work .

We run win98se and winxp . Win Xp being the host .

Now if we plugged the 2 cables in and then turn it off, both lights for each port on the HUB work for about 20 secs then then flash alternatively one after the other .

Windows XP constantly flashes "a network cable is unplugged" or is then Connected .

And the link light on the network card on the win98se flashes also .

there is 2 Modes on the HUB, Normal and Uplink, and both modes it does the same thing .

We have about 10 different cat5e patch cables to try .

also the first port on the HUB says Fibre on it, and the last port (8th) says switch .

The HUB is a Surecom EP-508x-tm Dual speed master hub .

please help

197424 2003-12-04 23:30:00 Make sure the patch cables you're using are all straight-thru cables, not crossover cables (but you've probably already done this).

Use ports 2-7 on the hub, that way it avoids any potential problems with figuring out what "Fibre' and "Switch" means.

Make sure the hub has power supplied to it (usually a power adaptor), and that all network cables are plugged in firmly.

197425 2003-12-04 23:43:00 What speed is the hub? Is it a 10Mbit or 10/100Mbit?

Go into the properties/configure page of the network cards and make sure that the "link speed" is set to "Auto negotiate". Reboot both machines and see if that works.
If you still have no luck, try changing the setting on both cards to "100Mbit/Half duplex", then reboot and see what happens. Finally if all else fails change the Link Speed to 10Mbit.
