197410 2003-12-04 21:26:00 I've just taken delivery of a new PC with XP Home installed, and have hooked it up to the home network running 3 W98SE PCs.

Mostly working well, but I can only get it to turn off by using the power off button! Trying to invoke Turn Off from the Start menu just results in the egg-timer showing for a split second, and then nothing else.

For the first day or so it did close down properly, but not any longer.

The only thing I'm suspicious about is that my daughter got onto the machine and started using MSN Messenger. Whenever this has been used on any machine on our network there have been problems, and as things were working ok until then... But maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree?

Also although the power to the PC is off the connection still shows on the network switch. When I close down the W98SE machines the connection lights go out on the switch also.

All suggestions gratefully received.

197411 2003-12-04 21:36:00 What nVidia drivers have you got, as I was getting the same problem for a while with the latest ForceWare driver set.

Try:
Start
Shutdown
Hit [enter] and see if that'll shut it down!

If it works, then your nvidia drivers are upset at something. I had this happen to me on a PC I maintain at the CyberCafe.

Let us know how you get on

Cheers

197412 2003-12-05 04:24:00 HI any chance that your comupter is a slave to your other computers ?
this can affect how it turns off. if you think its msm thats caused the problem try a virus scan or system restore (start menu, programs, accerious, system tools) hope this is helpful
