| 197343 | 2003-12-04 19:12:00 | I have loaded XP a number of times to my PC and now wonder if I might have corrupted something. When loading XP Upgrade the first-time, the install went to Microsoft to find upgrades for the install. This doesn't happen anymore. As an upgrade, for the first few times, I had to insert my old WIN98 to prove I did have a previous setup. This doesn't happen anymore, the install goes and completes without verification. The last two installs I have used XP to format my c: partition before installing XP again but both above conditions continue to apply. I can upgrade to XPSP1 but eveytime I try to upgrade to IE6SP1 I find the system corrupts in various ways hence the need to re-load XP. I do not intend to install IE6SP1 anymore. My question is, does the request to MS to get the upgrades for the install and the necessity to prove I did have an earlier version of WIN become inbedded somewhere on the partition that the XP format cannot over-ride? Should I use the old DOS format to clean C: and then re-load XP yet again? Bryan. |

Anytime I have reinstalled using an upgrade CD, it has wanted to see the qualifying product. I doubt that anything is being written to a hidden partition. I would be tempted to format prior to showing it the XP CD, as you suggest. That should remove all doubt. |
