2003-12-04 00:33:00 | Im thinging about upgrading to Xp from 2000pro but have been hearing conflicting opinions about.Have been told xp is fine as long as it is locked down??Anyone got any ideas? | demario (4943) | |
2003-12-04 00:46:00 | I was a strong supporter of Win 2000, and still am to a degree, but since switching to XP I am more than happy. I particularly like the short boot time (even though it is still starting up in the background...I know I know). I still change my display settings back to Windows classic feel as I like it better and it speeds things up a bit. I've got a P3 800 with 512 MB ram and it hums along quite happily. It hasn't been difficult to lock down at all, as long as you keep your system patched (which is no more difficult then in 2000), and have a decent antivirus and firewall program. I use Sysgate Personal Firewall (free) and InnoculateIT and have yet to have a virus or worm etc, although this also is due to vigilant useage. Seems to me that XP is a lot stabler as well as I have only got the blue screen of death once. Win 2000 I blue screened a lot more often. My vote is XP. Now lets hear the opposition. B.

2003-12-04 00:56:00 | Was just curious because my friend who built my pc(who was a computer tech for ages) hates xp,but another friend who is also a tech swears by it now and reckons it heaps faster.Ive got a p4 2.26,with 512 ram and sygate firewall and it goes fine with 2000pro,but xp is lookin good! | demario (4943) | |
2003-12-04 00:58:00 | the pentium 4 goes pretty good,I dont have to pay for the xp upgrade,or install so thought it mite be worthwhile. | demario (4943) | |
2003-12-04 01:16:00 | The only time xp is slow is when used on slow hardware, anything less then 800mhz i would suggest win98,or if they are prepared to have a slightly less responsive system then winxp,it does after all have many many many advantages over xp.The lower the specs, the more it will chug. i have installed xp on a 500mhz celeron laptop in the past and its still working fine,a bit slow but certanily usable. A computer with healthy hardware and healthy xp install should never bluescreen.I have 3 systems running at the moment and i cant say any of them have crashed, frozen or bluescreened in months.......Unless i start experimenting then i can bring on some grief in a major way.
