197046 2003-12-03 20:53:00 I am looking at pricing for a notebook and have seen the Clevo D430,on paper its a good price for the features but the obscure brand and unknown history in NZ is a worry, has anybody bought one or know how good they are.

197048 2003-12-03 22:17:00 Hi again godfather,
I have had a look there, couldn't find the D430 info listed, seems to be a down under model for nz and aussie,I need to be sure it has a RS232 com port for my time clock hardware.the price is good but will it fall over one month out of warranty.
regards,
john.

197049 2003-12-03 22:56:00 I noticed it was a local NZ/Aus only model by the hits on Google as well.

You are right to be concerned at the availability of a serial port. Very few have them now.

I have recently upgraded to a HP Z4315 (2.2 GHz Mobile Celeron) laptop, one of the deciding features was that it has every type of port.

Parallel, serial, USB, Firewire, IRda, Ethernet are all built in.
Has a DVD Player and CDRW writer combo drive as well.
For $2,000 plus GST it was reasonably priced.

197050 2003-12-03 23:01:00 I don't see it on the 410 or the 470. One could assume its likewise not present on the 430?

Also watch the type of CPU used. Many use desktop CPU's, which run very hot. Mobile versions are better.

197051 2003-12-03 23:15:00 Yes I agree,
is the 2.2 celeron the same as the low battery drain P4.

Do you have any notebooks in mind that would be as good like the one you have bought about same price,I liked the 15in screen for easier 2 people viewing.

197053 2003-12-03 23:55:00 And keep in mind that the clevo range are supplied without operating system,so you need to add that into the price. metla (154)
197054 2003-12-03 23:58:00 Bugger, sorry to keep adding to this but i just checked out the listing of that model on my page and its specs list a serial port.

197055 2003-12-04 00:09:00 As far as I know the Mobile Celeron is similar to the low drain Mobile P4 in power consumption.
Its the full desktop AMD and P4 chips that run very hot, as there is less dissipation available in a notebook.

A colleague bought a Mobile P4 version of mine, with the 15" screen (mine is 14.1) The resolution is higher than the standard 1024 x 768, and from memory was 1600 x 1024 or similar. Nice screen, but even with large icons and fonts it was not always better, in many applications.

The Clevo is not that cheap if you have to buy the OS separately. Thats not clear in the ads I have seen.

Noel Leeming sold truckloads of the type I purchased, I set up several for colleagues. There doesn't seem to be any on offer, apart from an AMD powered Compaq. I have found that often the type of chip (Mobile or not) is unspecified, in that my model was advertised simply as a 2.2 Celeron when its actually a 2.2 Mobile Celeron.
