197059 2003-12-03 18:16:00 Hi all:

I'm a complete newbie to Linux, as I just installed it a few days ago, dual-booted with XP still on my computer.

What I'm trying to do, and I know it's possible, and supposedly easy: I want to connect to the network which my other XP computer hosts and also use its ICS.

So far, when I get the network state 'up' there is no internet and in fact, XP comes up with a little message informing me that there is an IP Conflict with another system on the network. As far as I know, it is not a hardware issue, as the network runs fine when I reboot into XP.

In attempt to establish a handshake between the two computers, I pinged the other computer, to get a timeout. Same response from the other machine. dhclient doesn't seem to do any good, either.

Please note the following for my LAN config:

Adapter 1: eth0
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Boot protocol: Static
Started on boot: No

Those were the settings which I have put in. If they should be different, feel free to tel me. The internet connection which I am trying to get to is Xtra's Jetstart (which after the recent article, I am bound to be leaving shortly). There is no router involved in the network, it is a straight connection from each computer to a hub.

Thanks in advance,

Zan.

197060 2003-12-03 21:02:00 Hello,

You problem is not an un-common one, but something that's becoming easier to do all the time (to setup).

You'll be needing to change the IP Address of Mandrake, as it _IS_ conflicting with the other Windows XP PC on the LAN.

Basically, it looks right, but you'll have to change the last ".1" on the IP Address of this PC.
So your IP Address should be:
192.168.0.3
for example.

Im not sure about the Gateway settings (Should be your XP Machine or your router, Im still not too clear on that by reading your post sorry), but try either and if one doesnt work then use the other :-)
A router is a hub/switch, only with extra functionality, just to get that cleared up...?!

Next, when you've changed your IP Address, you should be able to ping the other machine.
Then try samba..
Im not sure how MDK 9.2 sets it up (Ive never been a Mandrake fan, but the essence is the same) but theres a couple of ways.
SWAT
Mandrake's own tools
Command-line config editing

Personally I've always gone for the 3rd option, but YMMV.

Post back and we'll tackle Samba when you've got networkng sorted

Hope this helps

197061 2003-12-03 23:47:00 setting up mandrake to network with xp is easy,
go into the mandrake control centre and click on the networking option, then go into configuer internet / network, then change the work group to the same as your xp machine then reboot.

197062 2003-12-04 02:32:00 How exactly do I change the IP to 192.168.0.3?

Do I enter that IP in stead of 192.168.0.1 in those settings which I wrote in my original post?

197063 2003-12-04 02:33:00 Oh, and ilikelinux, how can I change the work group? I can change the host name... but that seems to be about it. Jaguar (4442)

i was at school and forgot that you didn't do it that way.

point yourbrowserto : localhost:10000
and you will need type in root as the user and root's password for the password.

Where it says workgroup, click on the dot next to the textbox. In the textbox type the workgroup (or domain) of the windows machines.

197065 2003-12-04 04:38:00 Ok, well now the Windows machine sees a computer in the workgroup... which detects the computer OK, but the Linux machine can't seem to find the XP computer.. still no luck when I try and make them ping eachother. This is good, though. Now Windows sees the Linux machine. Jaguar (4442)
197066 2003-12-04 06:24:00 But they cant png each other...???

The Workgroup wont matter if you're trying to ping them, so leave File-sharing til the PC's do ping

You're sure they dont now?

And yes, in answer to your question, change 192.168.0.1 in Mandrake to 192.168.0.3
Feel free to change the 3 to something else, but Im guessing 3 isnt in use ;-)

197068 2003-12-04 07:13:00 Not sure how to change the IP no. in the GUI in Mandrake (use redhat-config-network in RedHat).

At the command prompt logged in as root, type:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0

then restart the network services with:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
