197227 2003-12-04 09:33:00 Laura and WalOne - why don't one of you start new a new thread "off topic - formatting tests" and try out some of the formatting tricks. You tend to need a wee practice to get it right and that way Murray's thread won't get too hijacked :D Jen C (20)

197230 2003-12-04 10:47:00 Hmm... when I don't want to do one I do. Should I do my practice lines here Jen or a new thread ;) one that stretches right off your screen :D

Anyway I'm printing off version 3.00.1. right now and I've still got a wee tiny tuft of hair left which means things have improved.

I stared with fresh image files and re did all the pretty colour coded arrows, etc, in Photo Shop. I then re- batch converted all the jpeg's to 100 DPI 256 colour, medium compression files but kept the EXIF data (can't tell you why, its a secret). Then one by one I popped them back in with the text as linked not embedded, not saved with document but float over text. Word was still slowand a mite grumpy but nothing locked, the dumby stayed in and I kept my last bit of hair.

Can't printers be sooo ssloooowwwwwww.

Thanks for all your help and good humour.

Cheers Murray P

197231 2003-12-04 10:53:00 Murray, have you tried saving your docs in .rtf (rich text format)? This generally makes the file size smaller and has the benefit of being able to be opened on other word processing applications?

197232 2003-12-04 11:02:00 Hi Murray P,

Just reading what you said about 'saving as' to another file causes the file to shrink. Do you have the 'Allow fast saves' option turned on in Tools, Options, Save options? I'm assuming Word '97 has this option, but I'm not sure (I'm using Word 2000). If it's turned on, try turning it off because I believe it can cause problems like you're describing with large/complicated documents. With Allow Fast Saves turned on as you edit the document it keeps tacking the edits onto the end of the document on disk which as you can imagine causes the document to increase in size dramatically and must be a pain for Word to keep track of. Where I used to work we always made sure that option was turned off on all the computers because it causes more trouble than it's worth IMHO.

Hope this helps.

197233 2003-12-04 11:09:00 Not for the purpose you suggest. Would it make any difference to the image sizes and/or does it tend to leave out all the extra (sometimes) extraneous coding Word adds in the background?

Cheers Murray P

PS. 2nd copy is now printing :)

197234 2003-12-04 11:17:00 Hi Rod

Fast saves are turned off but, "Always create a backup copy", is on and "Allow backround saves" is on with save auto recovery info every:" is set to 5mins. Any suggestions with that lot, I'm loath to do work without a backup.

197235 2003-12-04 11:33:00 Hi Murray,

OK, those save options sound reasonable to me. I can understand you wanting a backup copy with all the trouble you're having ;). I don't know what else to suggest ?:|

Cheers.

197236 2003-12-04 16:37:00 Well the birds are making a gawdawfull racket outside and I'm on version 4 . 0 now . Its still in alpha mode but I have great hopes for this iteration of the project . The project is as yet unamed so some suggestions will come in handy due to the fact I can't think of any publishible ones at the mo .

The reason why I've decided to drop beta 3 . 00 . 1 and move straight onto alpha 4 . 0 is that in a state of shear genius I decided to bind one of the copies of the whole dam thing in reverse, not just the miscrient doc, everything X-( Of course it was the last one and I had closed all the files in preparation for some shut-eye . Can you guess what happened when I opened the file, I've seen better sights down a builders long drop .

Uh oh, here come the cats . Just when I need them . Funny how they always have a great sense of occassion . Gotta go . . . the things just finished printing and I've got something important to do . . . .
