197080 2003-12-04 20:02:00 You have to be root to run ifconfig

Open a terminal window and type:
su -
[Enter your root password]

Now, type:
ifconfig

It'll show you your current network interfaces (including lo which is loopback, for pinging localhost AFAIK).

Next, type:
ifconfig down eth0
ifconfig up eth0 192.168.0.3

This will make _sure_ your IP Address is 192.168.0.3, and the netmask defaults to 255.255.255.0 if you select a class C range IP.

Next, type:
route
(As root still)
and post back the results of that here.

Check now though if you can ping 192.168.0.1

Cheers

Chill.

BTW - You dont need to reboot your PC at any stage of the way as far as Im aware... I _never_ have with networking Linux, and see no need to start now ;-)

Simple take the ethernet interfaces down then bring them back up. Shuold take about 6-7 seconds max ;-)

Er...

197083 2003-12-04 20:18:00 Also tried:

>su - root
(then switches to zan@localhost root in stead of zan@localhost zan but I still can't use ipconfig.

197084 2003-12-04 20:19:00 Hold on, I've spotted my mistake it's iFconfig, not ipconfig... Windows has polluted my mind. I'll give it a go now. Jaguar (4442)
197085 2003-12-04 20:24:00 You just type:
su -
You can add the root afterwards... but yeah....

And make sure you run:
ifconfig
lower-case, Linux is case sensitive remember :-)

I don't think that went too well...

197087 2003-12-04 20:48:00 Sorry, got that round the wrong way... try:
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3

route add default gw 192.168.0.1

Come to think of it,when you run:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3
That should bring it up... ;-)

Try that and lemme know how you get on :-)

197088 2003-12-04 20:55:00 Ok, this time there was no error... so I assume that it worked... what do I do now? Jaguar (4442)
