197317 2003-12-04 11:46:00 Re posting of Web Links:

For those who may still find it difficult after reading the formatting options at the top of the thread reply box, here is another way of looking at the same thing. Perhaps it may help.

To post a link to a web address, that will open the address by clicking on a word (or words) of your choosing, here are the steps to take:

Note: I will use double spacing in the examples. You will need to use single spacing. ( If I use single spacing it tries to make parts of my explanation into a link).

Follow these steps from 1. to 5. Type everything that shows in bold type below. Type it all in one line with no spaces at all.

1. Type [ u r l =

2. Now, straight after that = sign, type the web address, making sure that it starts with h t t p : / /

3. Close the web address with a bracket like this one...... ]

4. Now type your chosen word or words, such as Click Here or similar.

5. Close off the whole line with [ / u r l ]

That's it. After the typing it should look like this example but without any of the double spacing I used:

[ u r l = h t t p : / / www.pcworld.co.nz]Click Here[ / u r l ]

All that will show on the main forum page will be the two words Click Here and they will be underlined and a blue/purple colour.

Finally, before posting your masterpiece, click on Preview at the bottom of the reply box. This will open up your message exactly as it will look on the main Press F1 forum. If you did it correctly, you can click on the 'Click Here' link you have just made to see if it works ok. If ok, and it opened the web link you just created, exit that site and it will return to the Preview window, then click on Post Message.

If it did not work, then at the bottom of the Preview window, click on Go Back/Edit, fix any mistakes and try again.

Cheers :)

197321 2003-12-05 11:51:00 Hi Laura and mejobloggs, thanks for the replies, glad to be able to help for a change, it doesn't happen very often. :)

Re incorrect links, it can be interesting to look at the original typing to see if you can spot what went wrong.

To do that, go to the posting where the incorrect link is showing. Click on reply (even though you will not be actually making a reply) and the reply box will open.

Although you don't need to, if you scroll down a little you can see the original post. That is not the original typing though.

To see the original typing, click on the two words 'Quote original' at the top of the reply box. (Don't click on the three words 'Original post (below)' , as that just takes you to where you scrolled to before.)

Inside the reply box you will now see the original as it was actually typed. Each line will be preceded by the > sign to show that it is a quote.

Study it closely to see if you can spot the mistake.

When you have finished, make sure you don't click on 'Post Message', just exit the window.

Try it out on the correct one in the above post where it says link. Click on reply and follow the above instructions, you won't see any mistake, but it will let you see the original typing.

Here is an incorrect one I made up for testing. Click on reply, follow the above and see the actual original typing. Because I did use a correct web address, it is a clickable link, but it sure looks funny eh!.

click here[ /url], (now, because I put a space before the / in the [ /url] it did not get proper closure, so all of this is in blue and is underlined until I do give it closure. I will now enter the correct closure without the extra space (http://www.pcworld.com),done, and it now shows in black and is not underlined.

Finally, here is how it should have been.

click here (http://www.pcworld.com). That's the American PCWorld site by the way, not the NZ one.

Cheers :)

Thanks again for your patience.

197323 2003-12-07 01:23:00 Also if there is a dead link, in most browsers if you right click on it you should have a context menu choice of copy Link location (or something functionally similar)
With that you can just paste the copied link somewhere & see if you can see why it’s dead .

1 . Spelling error i . e . Main Page here at PressF1 ( . preesf1 . co . nz) or A random Website from my bookmarks (http://www . memestreems . com" target="_blank">www . preesf1 . co . nz) or A random Website from my bookmarks (http:)

These are fairly common errors if someone has simply typed in the URL from memory (especially at 4 am in the morning . Caffeine will only take you so far ;-))

2 . old links say from Newsites CNN or The Time or some such The Times ( . nytimes . com/2001/06/20/international/middleeast/07TACT . html?hp" target="_blank">www . nytimes . com) Now with this one its a tad more challenging to pick up where the url was meant to point . In fact I had to purposefully mutilate this URL as most often large news sites will maintain their articles for long periods of time . But smaller sites may shift the article to an archive location .
Basically here I only have a few suggestions . You could simply truncate the URL in the address bar so the link above would become . . .

h t t p : / / w w w . n y t i m e s . c o m

Or you can be lazy & tell the postee the link is deader than Chers Music career

3 . Links from sites that require a login, typically forums with stricter access control to the posts than perhaps we are used to here at pressf1 .
Unfortunately I don’t have any easy examples for anyone to toy with, but as a suggestion if you do get linked to a forum or some other limited access content, (& you care enough) you may simply want to sign up for it & click the link again ;-)

4 . Here at pressf1 careless use of the auto formatting of the board can leave you with links that look like this google (www . google . com)
This ends up like this
. pcworld . co . nz/www . google . com" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz when linked .

& was written in like this
[ url=www . google . com]google

(I haven’t tested this in any other browsers (using Firebird 0 . 7) so I’m really not sure if that is a particularly common problem .

Again an easy solution here is to pick out what is obviously not meant to be there .

Hope that helps . I personally find that you could repair most links that you find are broken .

P . S . another point to note is that you can use more complex versions of this desire to see behind the scenes & see what someone has linked to . Hmm what’s a good example? Ah, let’s say you see a movie website that intrigues you . . . for instance Kaena: The Prophecy (http://www . kaena . lycos . fr/)
& if your like me using a non IE browser & don’t want to have to add plugins to view content in the browser, then when you choose the option to play the trailer, you get . . . nothing (well a request to download a plug-in) But that’s not what we want is it? No we want a movie trailer . Another reason I suggest this is so that if you want to keep a copy of the trailer to share with friends you can save to disc for later .

Anyway . What do we have at this point . . . ( . kaena . lycos . fr/index . php?id=2〈=en" target="_blank">www . kaena . lycos . fr) a selection of video formats & sizes . Choose as you see fit . You should have a new page open up (without all the toolbars I might add, sorry pet peeve, but look here for a list of keyboard shortcuts that will always function ( . texturizer . net/firebird/keyboard . html" target="_blank">www . texturizer . net)) Press esc to stop the movie loading if you do have the appropriate plug-in, & just want to look when you like .

Now for the slightly harder bit . I want you to right click somewhere in the page that popped up, & select View Source . (You should also be able to select this from View, View Source in the toolbar up top but it’s probably been disabled dang it)
Now you are looking at the raw stuff of the World Wide Web, what we are looking for here is something like
embed src="BandeAnnonce/Kaena_FA_VO_1600k . mov"
Or
embed src="BandeAnnonce/Kaena_FA_VF_1600k . wmv"
What this represents in html is that this page will load the video from that source location . But what location you ask? There doesn’t appear to be a proper link there . . . its missing the beginning . . . shouldn’t it be www . somewhere . com/BandeAnnonce/Kaena_FA_VO_1600k . mov or something? Are you an idiot?

Nope not an idiot ;-) (Not atm anyway)

What you are looking at there is a relative URL, the server when it loads up the page looks in one place so BandeAnnonce/Kaena_FA_VO_1600k . mov is located where the rest of the page loaded .

Where is that?!? You ask?

www . kaena . lycos . fr/?

Not quite, let’s go back to the source that I asked you to view . (Please note, that the next bit works only in Firebirds, IE & Opera just don’t operate quite the same . )
If you look at the top of the source window, here ( . ezysurf . co . nz/~fgl@ezysurf . co . nz/source . JPG" target="_blank">homepages . ezysurf . co . nz) you can see where the source code is located . Nifty eh?

So if we take off the bit that is the webpage on the end . suffixed with htm or html (sometimes asp, php, jsp, doesn’t really matter at all ;-)) then replace it with the relative url we took from the page source we are left with this ( . lycos . fr/mov_en/BandeAnnonce/Kaena_FA_VO_1600k . mov" target="_blank">wwwkaena . lycos . fr)

Now for your test, see if you can fix the error . It’s an easy one .

Now for the disclaimer . I hold no responsibility for what you do with your knowledge, I give it to you under the assumption you will act responsibly & respect all appropriate copyrights valid for where you are in the world .
Although I also assume that if your like me & are simply prevented from viewing the content based on your choice of software, that you still have the right to fair use as intended .

Merry Xams, & I hope that wasn’t to confusing .

197324 2003-12-07 01:31:00 ok, having tested pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

as was made by this

[ url=www.google.com]google

In both IE & Opera, Nither function as intended, IE gives an appropriate 404 error, Opera, funnily thinks you are attempting to download www.google.com & gives a warning about the file type. I had a bit of a laugh about the idea of downloading google... I wonder how long THAT woudl take...

197325 2003-12-07 07:40:00 Excellent posting with clear instructions. Just to add a little, if the url is very long, then PF1 doesnt format it properly and when the posting is made there may be a space in the url that shouldnt be there.

Thats where the preview comes in, however, unless one is anticipating extra spaces, they can be easily overlooked.
