197644 2003-12-05 18:21:00 No, 'fdisk /mbr' will erase the Master Boot Record - you will be required to use a boot disk to boot your machine after that until you replace the Win98 MBR cyberchuck (173)

You do not need to run fdisk /mbr of a boot disk. It will run quite happily in a dos box (just tested and rebooted to varify on my win98 box) or plain ol dos prompt. It overights the main master boot record with the backup copy.

197646 2003-12-05 19:16:00 One thing to be carefull of when using that switch is if one has overlay software on the hdd. If used incorrectly the overlay software will be removed and the drive will be rendered inaccessable. mark.p (383)

"No, 'fdisk /mbr' will erase the Master Boot Record - you will be required to use a boot disk to boot your machine after that until you replace the Win98 MBR"

this is NOT the case at all...........you wont need to use a boot floppy to restart your machine it'll just re-write the mbr...........works real well ......

197648 2003-12-05 22:53:00 Hey guys, go easy on Cyberchuck. He was just trying to stop someone making, what he thought, was a big mistake.
We all know bad advice has been given in the past, so he was trying to help.

A reply more to learning/education rather than sarcasim or "dumbo" style would be more helpful and appropriate.

I originally thought that, as fdisk is usually used to erase, but that is incorrect. Doing "fdisk /mbr" just restores the MBR to the original.
