197613 2003-12-05 10:36:00 Hi All

I have a DVD reader as part of my Athlon system running XP with windows media Player 9. Whenever I try to play a legit DVD eg LOTR I get the error message "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection." I have tried to follow links to microsoft knowledge base but no luck. Real Player doesn't play the DVDs either.

I had previously used a trial version of DirectDVD, since expired.

What's going on? Is it a microsoft conspiracy? Can I fix it? Is there a free DVD player out there?

Any advice will be much appreciated. :)

197614 2003-12-05 10:45:00 Free...?!

I know the Spiderman DVD comes with some software on it... As a temporary solution you could hire that.

Im pretty sure WMP9 needs a 3rd party Plugin to play DVD's, and its likely a typical MS error message (not telling you much, or the wrong info..)

Is the Disc the correct Zone?
Does it happen with Other DVD's?

197615 2003-12-05 11:01:00 Thanks for the rapid reply Chilling_Silently

Yes, the DVD is from the correct zone and no DVDs work any more. I think you are right; it is the expired 3rd party "plugin" that has expired hence WMP9 throws up a nonspecific error message. I must get out Spiderman again.

Any good free DVD (software) players out there?

Thanks again

197616 2003-12-05 11:07:00 Aside from the one off the Spiderman DVD, I only know of Linux applications ;-)

197620 2003-12-05 23:54:00 You can play dvd on your old WM 6 . 4 which I think every computer has; even if you upgrade it¡¯s still there .

Just go to start / run type in: mplayer2 . exe and you will see it .

However, you will need to make some adjustments as follow .

Open your registry and find the key below .

Create a new string value called "EnableDVDUI" and set it to "yes" to enable DVD functionality .

Restart Media Player for the change to take effect .

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\P layer\Settings]
Value Name: EnableDVDUI
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: Yes

197621 2003-12-06 00:08:00 I need to add that changing registry is dangerous. So take extreme care and do a registry back up. I have done the above alterations and it works fine. So be very careful with changing the registry. It works but take extreme caution, like triple check everything . lightfoot (39)
