198002 2003-12-07 01:02:00 I bought and installed a brand new 40gb Maxtor 7200rpm drive yesterday.

However, at the moment it is running so hot that I can barely touch it - my guess about 60-70 degrees or so. Should I be concerned, and if so, would this be a warranty issue?

198003 2003-12-07 01:11:00 the maxtor site should have the temp specs. tho a lot of it comes down to case airflow. you really want case temp to be no higher than 2-4 degrees above room temp. provided HD placement is not to werid, cooling shouldn't be a problem. tweak'e (174)
198004 2003-12-07 01:22:00 The HDD placement isn't too weird - it's the only 3.5" device in the entire case, and it is "in the middle", so there is plenty of space above and below. There is only one fan on the PSU, one on the CPU, one on Graphics Card, and a case fan I installed in the back of the PC, blowing air in.

I'll have a look on the Maxtor site, but I don't think I've ever seen a HDD run so hot before.

198005 2003-12-07 01:26:00 For future reference, I bought an el-cheapo case with a 400w power supply and no case fans, which may contribute to the problem. There are no air holes on the front of the case, but there are holes along the sides for ventilation. somebody (208)
198006 2003-12-07 02:43:00 why would you have a rear case fan blowing in all the hot air in that the psu just blew out ???

simply cut some air vent in the bottom of the front bezell and in the front steel of the case if need be........and don't forget to turn the case fan aound.

198007 2003-12-07 03:13:00 since the PSU fan is above the other fan, blowing hot air out, hot air rises, so it isn't a concern for the fan below, sucking in cold air which is lower down. That's my theory anyway.

I've emailed the store I bought it from to ask them what they think.

dosn't really work to well. plus i forgot to ad that due to air coming in right next to the exit fan, the air basicly goes in a loop, so there is very little air movment in the rest of the case which can cause the video card, hardrive etc to run somewhat hotter.

198009 2003-12-07 07:56:00 Fair point. I guess I'll have to switch the fan around tomorrow. Thanks for your help tweak'e. somebody (208)
198010 2003-12-07 12:14:00 I have a 120mm fan at the front of my case which is great because it cools my seagate 80gb HDD and gets air flowing . Seriously, get some case fans, they help a lot .

There is the saying that if it works then it's not too hot ;)

198011 2003-12-07 19:41:00 I've put in one case fan, but that's at the back of the case. There's no point in me putting a fan in the front, as there are no vent holes which it would be able to make use of.

I'll do what tweak'e said and make it so both fans at the back (PSU and extra fan) are sucking air out, so it should increase the amount of air being drawn in from the holes in the sides of the case.

The hard drive still works, so maybe it isn't too hot:D
