198551 2003-12-08 22:53:00 For the past week windows update is prompting me to install security update number 823559.

I have installed it 3 times over the last 3 days but each day it keeps propmting me to install it.

Anyone else had the same problem with this update.

198552 2003-12-08 23:28:00 A quick search of "823559" in google reports a few others with the same problem. Heres one:

Try removing the patch in Control Panel - Add/Remove programs, and reinstall?

198553 2003-12-08 23:32:00 Sometimes Microsoft's updates fail to register as installed.

It's happened to me (still does for a WMP update, despite not having WMP installed), and while it is annoying, generally you can find a reason for this happening on Microsoft's website somewhere. They may or may not release a changed patch which does not do this.

198554 2003-12-09 02:14:00 Yes, I have the same problem.
Mine dates back to August, when I installed it 3 days in a row before realising it was the same one.
A check on an overseas forum told me it was a known problem with this patch. I think it also provided a rather complicated solution which I as a real newbie was too nervous to attempt.
Realising I was not alone satisfied me enough then to simply click "Notify Me Later" on each Update notice...usually once a day.
(It did fool me by installing once more with a combined update a few weeks ago)
I think it began when my IE6 was re-installed from a techie's disk, ironically.
Unfortunately it's not listed in my Add/Remove programmes -or it would be long gone.
Now I treat it as a minor annoyance, but will certainly be pleased if anyone has a simple solution.

198555 2003-12-09 02:29:00 I could be a complete idiot and say GNU/Linux, but that's not quite so simple a solution. :D agent (30)
198556 2003-12-09 02:45:00 For me, maybe one day..?
But I've still got too much to learn on my first O/S to tackle a different one yet.

198557 2003-12-09 06:35:00 Have a look at this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) for similar problems and a possible solution. Susan B (19)
198558 2003-12-09 09:21:00 Thanks Susan B.

Yes, I did see this thread originally, but only skimmed it because much of the info didn't seem to fit my particular rogue patch.

For example:
1. The recurring updates weren't my own particular bugbear one.
2. Add/Remove was mentioned - and that's not an option. It just ain't here in my list.
3. Part of the thread related to uninstalling Windows auto update notifications. I come & go from this place/machine. I don't trust my memory to remember when I did what before the last time I left it for open country & no computers. I need Auto updates.....

Now it seems I need to do "Oxie's fix " - which I should've done then.
