198360 2003-12-08 07:44:00 I hope its not catching...... detail from current German prosecution:

The encounter that resulted in the charges against Meiwes was something of a "techie" affair. Meiwes is a computer technician and his victim, Bernd Brandes, 42, a computer engineer. One cannot know what goes on in the technological soul, apparently so nerdish, but it may be that all the exposure to bytes has consequences.

198362 2003-12-08 08:03:00 Not really suitable for a family forum guys.

There was no humour in that appalling story, so do we really need this on PF1?

Post removal would probably be a good idea.

198363 2003-12-08 08:09:00 I read the articles on Reuters, and was told about it previously by a friend.

Yes, what happened is quite appalling, but hey, the guy was probably born with his will; it's one of those things you can't supress. One would assume the video he made would contain sufficient evidence that both he and his 'victim' were willing.

Come on Billy, its been on the 6o'clock news most nights
Too much is made of PressF1 as being a "Family Forum" How many families sit rounf the screen together chewing over the threads.

I fail to see anything that would frighten the "little kids" in the original posting. Hey, all that was mentioned was that the people were computer nerds.
Not very ghoulish. If anything pretty mild compared to what has been heard on the 6o'clock news, I would have thought

198366 2003-12-08 10:15:00 Let me make this simple to understand.

Ages are not posted on this Forum, and we have at least one 13 year old posting and who knows how many other young people browsing. Is it too much to ask that we not apply adult moral standards (or lack thereof) to PF1 and have unnecessarily nasty and unnatural OT material posted?

Just because it is on the news does not mean it has to surface here. I do recognise the geeky connection, but IMHO that doesn't justify bringing such an horrific subject up on this forum. Incidentally, if I am not mistaken it is our moderators who have decided that we should maintain this as a family forum with standards of behaviour and post content many of us would like to maintain for our own children.

If I am wrong, and Bruce or robo think that this is a suitable subject for PF1 then so be it, but that's my opinion.

198367 2003-12-08 10:46:00 Well I don't particularly think this is a good thread to have floating around, but I am sure a 13 year old can ascertain that cannibalism is not right. However, in the case of this man, I do not see why he should be charged with murder, as the other man was willing to be eaten. Call me what you like, but I would also support euthanasia being made legal, because I do not see why someone should continue to live if they want to die.

Admittedly perhaps the grisly details of what happened is not suitable for 13 year olds, but I think the same notion applies here as to what people are pressing about the boy who escaped a rape charge in Christchurch because he was not old enough to be prosecuted. Basically, people said that children these days are maturing faster/earlier than previous generations, and hence why the age where you can be prosecuted should be lowered. I would support this too.

Please note I am 15. Suffice to say (and I believe I have said it somewhere here before), at primary school I knew things (some trivial, some less so) that some people would consider unsuitable for children of that age. AFAIK, the majority of other children did too. My point is, I believe young people can discern what is wrong and what is right - there are some exceptions, although we are only measuring them against the majority.

Of course, I also do think that this might be a sensitive issue for some people, and that it would be unsuitable for some people to see this thread.
