198346 2003-12-09 10:50:00 I concede that users need to be educated, but Spybot serves more purposes than just protecting IE, although there are settings in it aimed specifically at IE.

I myself have recently started using Mozilla, and not because it's any more secure (after all, I did say I tweaked IE's settings to be locked down), but because it's one step in my way to move towards Linux.

What I don't like is that Mozilla cannot be used to check Windows Update. I know Opera can identify itself as IE to websites, but I never tried this feature on Windows Update, and in any case, I don't want the ads from the free version of Opera.

Users do need to be made aware of alternatives, but with an 85-90% market share, and being commonly used by corporations, many people simply do not even stop to think that there are worthy alternatives to Microsoft software.

As a matter of interest, I run Adaware, Spybot, and Spysweeper. I find that I need all three to catch everything. Fortunately that isn't much.

I much prefer Opera, but probably use Internet Explorer half the time.

Cheers
