198433 2003-12-08 11:33:00 Well have fun Metla. This is how we all learn. I just have the one system and use removable hard drives. Sitting at home playing with the computer system (s) sure beats going out and using "P" booze and crashing your car. Well it does to me anyway.

How the heck do you think I got this old? :-)

You have at least answered my questions and thanks for that.

198434 2003-12-08 12:33:00 It is possible to recover almost anything unless the platter is totally destroyed (I don't want to revisit that thread again) but as you say at what cost. Heaps to read it with the various types of hardware technology they can use and then the software to put it all back together again. It is cheaper if you haven't wiped everything or formatted but, they can get most of it all the same. Billy T posted a link to an article on the different methods used which was very interesting especially if you have a phd in physics and one in electonics for good measure.

Good luck with the recovery or piecing it all back together, whichever way you go.

198435 2003-12-08 16:44:00 Another thread that could be solved by a simple search of the forum. But its nice to release those angers eh... makes you feel better inside. aroc (3256)
198436 2003-12-08 20:17:00 Aroc,are you questioning my right to make a thread?

Well, thats another one on the list to be ignored when or if they ask for any help.Your post adds nothing to the thread therefor can only be post padding.

The thread works in 3 ways.

1.Its an example of a worst case scenerio when swapping over harddrives(hence the longish post describing the actions taken and resuting delemia)

2.It asks for a specific piece of software that i was unable to track down by running a search on the forum.

3.It presents the situation where other alternative software or methods may be more suitable for the job.

So in short,Bite me.

198437 2003-12-09 02:55:00 Try looking for "zap.exe" on this site. :D I've posted the link to the IBM site which has it several times here. It's either zap.exe or the other utility on the same IBM page which you want. Full instructions there. It's said to restore the disk to "like out of the factory". Graham L (2)
198438 2003-12-09 20:59:00 There's a program by Runtime Systems aptly names "Get Data back" that might be able to help you. It scans the hard drive and lists the filesystems found, then lets you choose which files you wish to recover. The website is found www.runtime.org

The price is not to bad for this kind of thing $69 US for the FAT version, $79 for the NTFS. I've found it to be pretty reliable, though it does take a while.

Cheers

Bite yourself. If you had been around for the past 3 months you would have noticed about 5 threads of similiar problems and solutions. To top it off we even have a FAQ on it... hah.

198440 2003-12-10 08:44:00 ok
first off just because the information is readily available on PF1 does not mean we do not help someone when they ask,

and 2nd when someone is having hassles with their puter (in Metla's case severe hassle's id say) they do not always think or say appropriately at the time and just want a helping hand or word instantly.
i have done this sort of thing before, just think fix the bloody thing at all costs, regardless of if i sat back and thought about it i could find the solution myself.....

we are all guilty of saying / doing things in haste, but we are not the judge and jury to condem them for asking for help, in Metla's case i would say this is rare, he help's more than needs help.

im not aiming this at anyone and certainly not at Metla, i am quite amazed he managed to last that long without telling any one what has happened, he needs to be commended not belittled, we can all learn from each other's mistakes, and if we dont, or someone doesnt more fool that person.

yeah and attack me whatever,

im getting used to it, when i have not caused any harm or flames, and have never said i am worthy of the great esteem a large post count comes with, ill always be a noob.
