198326 2003-12-08 09:11:00 ok I now have Ad-aware 6.0 and have done a scan and it has 321 objects quarantined. Now what do I do? Do I have to run this regularly? starfish (3019)
198327 2003-12-08 09:15:00 My advice is to install Spybot - it has a resident feature that will block future installation attempts of spyware. This means that you could technically get away with running scans less, because, as long as you update Spybot regularly, some programs won't be able to install.

As for Ad-Aware, make sure you tell it to make a backup of the items before deleting them.

198328 2003-12-08 09:16:00 run it regulaly, don't forget to update it.

also make sure your windows updates are upto date. however don't forget that fooling the user is an easy way for them to get into a pc.

198329 2003-12-08 09:17:00 So should I install Spybot instead of ad-aware?
Do you know the website name for spybot?
You are all so helpful

198330 2003-12-08 09:17:00 Yeah it's a good idea to run Ad-Aware regularly. I do a scan once a week, if not more frequently. caffy (2665)

Run Adaware at least once a week, after configuring it the way you want.

198332 2003-12-08 09:28:00 Spybot download here (www.safer-networking.org) Jim B (153)
198333 2003-12-08 09:28:00 The website for Spybot is http://security.kolla.de. You can run both of them, but Spybot is considered to be more advanced than Ad-Aware (as in it has a higher learning level and is more complicated to use). Spybot can detect if Ad-Aware is installed, and will tell you that it may find false results in Ad-Aware's backups.

Likewise, Ad-Aware will probably do such a thing if it detects Spybot. It doesn't really matter which one you run, or if you run both. I haven't used Ad-Aware for a while, so I don't know if it now offers resident protection, but I know Spybot does, along with other useful tools such as secure file shredding, and placing ad server addresses in your hosts file (will remove a substantial amount of advertisments from your internet browsing).

198334 2003-12-08 22:33:00 I would like to install spybot but am not sure which mirror to choose. There are 3 different ones which I have never heard of before, do I just pick any one and go from there? starfish (3019)
198335 2003-12-08 22:47:00 Just use the one which gives you the fastest download.
They will all download the same program
