Windows loads startup items from multiple locations in the Registry, two places in WIN . INI, and two main folders in your system drive . It always loads the seven groups in the same order: 1 . Registry (Machine Service) - Each value in the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices defines a startup item . The value's data string is the command to be executed at startup . 2 . Win . ini (Load=) - The value of the Load= key in the [Windows] section of WIN . INI consists of one or more startup program names, separated by semicolons . Neither long filenames nor command-line arguments may be used . 3 . Win . ini (Run=) - The value of the Run= key in the [Windows] section of WIN . INI consists of one or more startup program names, separated by semicolons . Neither long filenames nor command-line arguments may be used . 4 . Registry (Machine Run) - Each value in the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run defines a startup item . The value's data string is the command to be executed at startup . 5 . Registry (Per-User Run) - Each value in the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunServices defines a startup item . The value's data string is the command to be executed at startup . 6 . Common Startup Group - Each shortcut in the common startup group (by default, C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) is launched at startup . This group does not appear on the Start menu . Some Windows installations will not have a common startup group . 7 . Startup Group - Each shortcut in the Start menu's startup group (by default, C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) is launched at startup . Use the MSCONFIG utility to see what is being loaded where etc . . . . First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot . Next, see whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up . If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs" . However, it isn't often easy to know what is what in there . One of these URL's may help . | 198422 | 2004-12-27 18:13:00 | This should be coming from a process with a name like bwgo0000a085.exe I found this on my brother's computer. It seems to be a helper program that is part of BackWeb which is related to Logitech's Desktop Messenger program. Which is some sort of live update manager developed by logitech to keep your keyboard drivers and etc.. up-to-date. (It does not appear to be spyware or malware, just an obnoxious helper utility). You can uninstall it via removing the BackWeb registry key in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Or simply try to disable via Logitech's application. (off hand don't know how since I did it manually). |
