198316 2003-12-08 03:47:00 Received my telecom account today and there was 4 calls made to a website totalling $120.00
I rang telecom as I had no idea what this was all about and they said that an adults only website had made the charges.
I have never never been into any adults only website and was pretty upset by this.
Telecom has credited my account of these charges and also put some sort of block on my phone account so it will not happen again.
I went into my internet connections and there was my infogen account that I use and also one called DIDI which I deleted.
What is this DIDI and would that be the problem?
How did it get on my computer?
Any help will be very much appreciated.

198318 2003-12-08 04:02:00 Someone using your computer (or even yourself, inadvertently) has gone to a dubious website and tried to download what appeared to be an image, perhaps, which installed an exe that auto dials to a prOn site.

Suggest you run Spybot, AdAware or similar to track it down.

if the offending website owner tries to recover the cash from you, tell them exactly where to get off. They'll probably be a scummy overseas outfit, with, I am certain, no recourse to suing you successfully here.

If they do give you grief, suggest you post back here to rally support.

198319 2003-12-08 04:03:00 this is what is often called a "porn dialer"

at some time when you are surfing you might have seen a wodnow pop up that asks if you want to accept a program......

if you say yes and dont know what you are accepting then you can get a lettle program on to your computer. other wahy in are ActiveX scripting.

once a program gets in to your computer it sets up a new connection and then makes it the default, the connection will ring a 0900 type number that cost you lots ($120)

the way to protect your self is discussed in the "security thread"

pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

also getting a firewall and anit-virus programs would be a good move.

198320 2003-12-08 04:04:00 Have a look at the forum's Spyware FAQ (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). It has information and links to information about this sort of thing. tommy (2826)

198322 2003-12-08 04:07:00 "spyware" is the evil stuff that sits in your computer. You use SpyBot or Adaware to locate and delete this kind of xxxx.

Just do a search here at PressF1 to find lots more info about these useful utilities.

198324 2003-12-08 04:12:00 Most of those sort of things came from ActiveX controls.

ActiveX controls are evil, and no matter what those that make them may say, they are a danger to regular users.

The problem can be fixed by not using Internet Explorer, as there are many other free browsers that do not use ActiveX.

If you feel inclined to stick with IE, and suffer the hastels and dangers of ActiveX you have too choices:

1. Disable ActiveX and be bugged a stupid error box that pops up every time a site attemps to send you an ActiveX control.

2. Tell IE to ask you about every ActiveX control, only usefull if you know what the ActiveX control is in the first place, and also could allow the problem you just had too occur again.

Both of these options can be found in the Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Level.
The very first thing you will see is the ActiveX options.

Note: Many online banking sites are too lazy to use Java aplets and need ActiveX to work.
If this is the case you can add "Trusted Sites" and allow them to execute the evil ActiveX.

I gave up on IE a long time ago and complain to my bank weekley that their online banking is broken and needs fixing <grin>
