199071 2003-12-10 05:34:00 my printer has run out of ink and a refill didn't work so I'm up for a new printer...
anyone know of a site with comparisons of the cost of running (ink per page, etc.) of all the cheapies, around the $100 mark..?

thanks Trev

199072 2003-12-10 05:47:00 Whats the problem with it?

I saw somewhere that the Epsom's have a utility that won't allow you to use all the ink in the cartridge or third party ink but, there's a little progy that disables it, nice to know :D .

I have also noticed that the HP cartridges that I get for my deskjet 5550 are opaque where the ones I used for my old deskjet were transparent so you could check the level . The utility that warns me that my ink is about to run out does so about 200 pages before it actually does . My cynicism tell me they made the cartridges so I could not see the real ink level . Money for jam .

Moral of story: The ink is the biggest long term cost of an inkjet, check before you buy including pages per cartridge .

199073 2003-12-10 05:57:00 I don't know of a site for comparisons but I would recommend a Cannon because the printhead is seperate from the ink cartridge unlike HP and most of the others. With HP if your yellow runs out it is a whole new cartridge but with a multi tank Cannon you just have to fit the yellow. mikebartnz (21)
199074 2003-12-10 06:02:00 Try OEM (http://www.oem.co.nz/) for printer comparisons. wuppo (41)
199075 2003-12-10 07:42:00 OEM site appears useless. Canon from experience is the best.

199076 2003-12-10 08:32:00 Have'nt had the best experience with Epson, suggest HP . Don't beleive any cartridge levels given, the only reliable reading is when the cartridge fails to print after doing a cartridge clean. Have just done a yellow refill on a HP cartridge and it is working 100%. Know this is a bone of contention but once your 12 month guarantee runs out I would go for refills of original cartridges, it is a case of carefully following the instructions, and it is considerably cheaper.HP have on line an excellent set of instructions about cleaning the printer and cartridges. 199077 2003-12-10 08:45:00 mine is a hp 656 and I let it dry ouy before refilling unfortunately.

just what I was thinking Murry, which is why I'm looking for a comparison, or I could just buy the cheapest anyway, but it'd take a bit of leg work to find out how much ink each printer comes with.

anyway the HP DeskJet 3325C doesn't look too bad for $80 odd dollers (given that I now own some spare ink for an HP!) or maybe the Canon Bubble-Jet S200SPx for a couple of bucks more (al'a pricespy) any thoughts anyone

I don't want to login at OEM wuppo, not enough incentive... thanks anyway

199078 2003-12-10 09:25:00 Canon S200spx at AquilaTeck for $78 . 10 + GST .

Are your current HP cartridges compatible with the one you are looking at . That would be a big head start in the cost stakes . Use thise then go out and by anothe printer ;)

199079 2003-12-10 09:41:00 One report I heard a while ago was that HP were going to change their print head design so that the head would not last for a refill. You've got to realise that most printer manufactures make their money from consumables and not so much the printer. mikebartnz (21)
199080 2003-12-10 20:14:00 I thought all hp ink was the same? (don't know why though, money being what it is!) Trev O (452)
