198875 2003-12-09 19:06:00 I'm a New Zealander but currently in France, building a computer.

Which graphics card should I choose out of these, they are all in my price range (100-250 euros) but I'd rather spend less if I'm still getting good power.

ATI Radeon 9600 8x 128mb - 141 €
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 8x 128mb - 156 €
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 8x 256mb - 157 €
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 8x 128mb - 75 €
NVIDIA Geforce 4 Ti 4200 8x 128mb + VIVO - 130 €
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5600 8x 128mb - 121 €
ASUS Radeon 9600 XT TVD 8x 128mb + VIVO - 204 €
MSI Geforce FX 5700 8x 128mb - 183 €

I'm looking for a card that can let me play games at high settings, 1280x1024x32 resolution for around about a year.

and try and get vivo with it,
if u didn't know what vivo means, it is video in, video out.

I've got a Ati radeon 9100 vivo pro 128mb, and it runs like a dream, [Day Dream] but would like a ati radeon 9600 pro 256mb vivo, that would be the day [\Day Dream]

198877 2003-12-09 19:30:00 Thanks, if you want to know what a € is worth, it is basically double of a NZD. So the "157 €" ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb card would be roughly $300 NZD.

Ilikelinux, would the 9600 Pro with VIVO just be the ASUS Radeon 9600 XT TVD (128mb + VIVO) for 204 € ?

Why is the 256mb version of 9600 only one euro more than the 128mb? Has the 128mb got more clock/frequency/mhz or is that extra 128mb of memory just for show on the box, and dosn't really make any difference...

198878 2003-12-09 19:38:00 no the XT are a newer model again, i would go for the 9600PRO with 256MB thats some real good bang for buck and a good card to boot. Budda (2736)
198879 2003-12-09 20:29:00 Would it still be considered a good card say, in one year? Would I be able to comfortably play games like HALF LIFE 2 (not nessceraily on MAX options) or DOOM III when they are released next year? Mark Veldhuizen (2570)
198880 2003-12-09 20:43:00 I think so, because it has Direct X 9 support, but not entirely sure.

Why don't you go for a Radeon 9800XT, or the Geforce 5950 Ultra? :-)

Then you can not buy a monitor or a harddrive or something to save money.

198881 2003-12-09 21:30:00 Heh. I'll stick with the 9600 Pro.

About monitors, I'm still choosing mine (I am in graphics and want only CRT) and I found what seems to be a pretty good deal. It's from CONFORAMA (In France) and is a Lite On 19" monitor, 1600x1200 max resoluion with good pitch and stuff, anyway it is only 160 euros, or 320 bucks. It is also black and silver, which goes well with my case/mouse/keyboard, etc. Seems like a good deal, it's on special I think, but I don't think they reduced the price too much.

Is Lite On good for monitors? I have heard of them only for CDRW.

198882 2003-12-10 01:49:00 According to benchmark, the Radeon 9500 is actually much faster (for Games) than 9600Pro and its cheaper. If you can still find that card, If I were you, I would rather get 9500.

I recently brought the new radeon 9600Pro 8x 128DDR, new verison (400/600mhz (core speed/memory speed)). I cant play C&C Generals, and have slight problems with other games as well like flicking screen after exit the game.

Overall, I am not happy with the card.

198883 2003-12-10 09:46:00 Have you got the latest drivers? I heard they fixed something to do with C&C in the latest Catalyst drivers. I think its 2.8 now. mejobloggs (264)
198884 2003-12-10 10:23:00 Personally I try and stick to nVidia cards because of their excellent Linux support (Which would be important for me, but not others...)

Add me to a list of people who suggest the 9600Pro :-)
