198783 2003-12-09 09:55:00 Hi.
I'm thinking about getting my first mobile phone (as you may have seen from my prevous post).
But I'm a little confused about a few things.

If i purchased a phone from a online site - not an offical dealer, what happens? can i use the phone straight away? does it have its own number? or do i have to go to telecom or vodafone for them to set it up?

Whats a SIM? do all phones have this? i see the word SIM and SIM2 alot on the vodafone site, but never on the telecom site.

I read that some phones have the ability to check emails threw the phone. I have a Paradise email adress - is it possible for me to check my emails through a phone? How much does it cost?

Vodafone or Telecom - whats the difference? Are there any other service providers?

Oh, and out of curisity, whats the difference (is there a differnece) between a CELL phone, and a MOBILE phone?

What are Java Applets or games?

Polyphonic ringtones - 4 chords or 16chordes? what it all mean?

phone plus PDA = ? access to internet??? I have an iPaq PDA - if i got a mobile phone, could i use the 2 together to check email etc on my pda?

um, i think thats it. Oh, 1 more thing, I'm looking at a few Nokia phones, do the model numbers resemble better phones?
are they created in order? first a 2xxx model, then a 22xx, then a new 3xxx etc etc. Is a 6800 better than a 3200 (if there is one :P)

o - and lastly, if i got a nokia 6800 (what i'm looking at) I can go to either vodafone or telecom aye? like nokia don't make fones just for vodafone do they?

Thanks, i think thats it.
If you know the answer, or can clear my conerns up a bit to all or any of these, please do so. I tried to write it so each question is separate - so you can easily answer a single question etc

Thanks

198784 2003-12-09 10:11:00 Hiya, i've just got a phone so i know how you feel ;) it's pretty easy really....

I bought my phone (nokia 3530) from a parallel import shop because it was a hell of a lot cheaper than DSE or first mobile etc. Once you have the phone, with vodaphone you just go to DSE or some where and get a prepay kit ($35 or something)

This provides a SIM card which you plug into the back of your phone (similar to the little gold chips in telecom phone cards). SIM2 is an extention of SIM with some other rubbish such as ring tones etc, nothing special but now part of any Vodafone connection.

I don't believe telecom uses simcards but rather load the info onto your phone. I don't know if you can bring one of your phone yourself and get them to do it or you have to buy one off them.

A cell phone is the samething as a mobile phone (there must be some reason for the differece such as it runs off a battery or something)

Java Applets are little programs coded in Java (the programming language), also known as J2ME. These can be downloaded off GPRS (mobile internet) etc and can be mini games, which can actually be a lot of fun (a reason i bought my java capable phone)

Polyphonic ringtones are basically midi files, i.e it has drums and tamborines, stuff that you create on a keyboard. These arn't monotone with just one tone with a different pitch (like normal phones).

You can access GPRS via a decentish phone, although it is expensive (10c for 10k) but it is good to download games/ring tones. i don't think you can hook a PDA and a phone together some how.

Nokia phone models are done weirdly, /shrug i have no idea how they do it but they base it on the model series it is in...

If you buy a prepay, it should have a connection pack. If just a handset, then you need to buy a connection pack. Cant help with Telecom details, but Vodafone is easy. A connection pack has the SIM card which has your number.

Vodafone have SIM cards, Telecom don't.
Personally I see the advantage with a SIM card, by putting your card in another Vodafone handset, the phone has your number and account. SIM2 hold more data.

Depends on the phone, but it can be expensive to wheel data across a mobile network. It originally costa fortune, as you had to pay for a licence for Outlook. Not sure what the story is now. I ont do it that way, see below (PDA)

Basically, no.

The name. No difference

Pathetic games

Quality of ringtone sounds

Yes. I do.
My phone (Vodafone) has an infra-red port, as does my PDA.

Costs about 1 minute connection time to dial in and clear 3 or 4 text e-mails. Attachments take a long time, connect speed = 9600 normal, quite a bit faster with GPRS (but much dearer data cost). I dial in from overseas just as easy.

Not necessarily. I had a 7210, "upgraded" to a 6210

Vodafone Nokias will not work on Telecom.
Telecom phones will not work on Vodafone.

The technology is different, the phones are manufactured for the network type, not interchangeable. Not changeable either.

The Vodfone system is more widely used in the world than the Telecom system. Vodafone have the majority share of the NZ market.

The Telecom system is slightly smarter than Vodafone at present, but Vodafone are upgrading and should soon be ahead of Telecom. For a while. Then it starts again.

198786 2003-12-09 10:39:00 Polyphonic ringtones, depending on the song, can sound an awful lot like the original song. Other times they sound distorted and different.

Basically, manufacturers market polyphonic ringtones as a way to truly express yourself (some people actually believe that your ringtone expresses your personality, etc). In my opinion, polyphonic ringtones serve no real useful purpose.

198787 2003-12-09 19:38:00 Cool.
Thanks guys for clearing that up.

Yeah, my PDA has a IR port - but I'll look into that later.

I think Ill go with vodafone then - as I was planning to go PrePay, and vodafone sounds alot easier.

And when you said that some phones are built for certain newtorks, how do i tell if the phone i want (nokia 6800)will work on the vodafone network?

Phones are built to work on one network ONLY.

Ask.

Its not always clear on adverts.

The same model of phone will not be built for both networks. As an example, Nokia made the 5110 for the GSM (Vodafone) 021 Network.
The same looking phone, but built differently for the Telecom 025 Network was a 5120.

The 6800 looks like a GSM (Vodafone) but its not listed on their site (www.vodafone.co.nz) its probably too new.

Not all phones have IR ports. Check.

198789 2003-12-09 20:08:00 IR is a pain.

GSM means 021.

Nokia phones are good, so are SonyEricssons. Some are shockers - like the GX10 from Sharp.

198790 2003-12-09 21:04:00 Fergie: As it looks like you live in Taranaki one very important consideration when choosing what phone to go with is reception. Stay away from Telecom's 025 phones as their reception is far inferior to their 027 system. Vodafone is similar to 027 so if you still plan to go with that you will be OK.

Telecom's 027 service currently has unlimited texting for $10 per month which is a very big attraction to the teen market. Who knows how long this offer will remain however.

198792 2003-12-09 23:03:00 OK.
I'll email vodafone asking them.
