I have just installed Ad-Aware (free edition) on a new HP ze4500 Laptop, running Windows XP Home Edition.
All is working Ok except for 1 important feature.

When I click on "Web update" (for new reference files) it instantly comes up with "complete" without even dialling out to connect with Lavasoft. (The machine is on a 56K modem dialup).

I have checked carefully the setup configuration and all appears in order. (I have used Ad-Aware for at least a year, without any problems on other computers).

Can anyone help me, I'm sure it must be a really simple answer but it eludes me!!

All the best and hope you can help.

198755 2003-12-09 18:20:00 Would u happen to have a firewall installed? yingxuan (3330)
198756 2003-12-09 20:26:00 The latest version is 6.181 and the current update is 06.12.2003 . If this is what you have on your laptop it is politely telling you not to waste your time by trying to update. FrankS (257)
198757 2003-12-09 20:33:00 What I think peter was referring to was the program version, not the reference file. When you open Adaware, look at the bottom right hand corner.

Yes Peter, it just does this. guess it is in the program. I "locked" my firewall and tried an update, and it gave me the same response. Go online and it updates fine. Something to live with I guess.

198758 2003-12-09 20:38:00 Thought you might be interested further to my above, went off line, tried to get an update and got same result as you did. Suspect that the updates are done on a weekly or longer period and the programme is set to give you the "complete" window if your update is less than a week old. FrankS (257)
198759 2003-12-09 20:41:00 Hey good thought! Might investigate that a little further. Pheonix (280)
198760 2003-12-09 20:57:00 Maybe not such a good thought, just went on line, opened Adaware, clicked update, firewall came up requesting permission to contact Adaware, gave permission, Adaware contacted, advised no updates available. Looks as though the laptop has a firewall preventing out going message to Adaware. FrankS (257)
