199081 2003-12-10 20:53:00 I bought a Canon s200 a couple of months back. Its a great little printer if all you want to print is black text. Color is ok but certainly nothing to write home about. Installation was a breeze and its small footprint means it fits on my small shelf quite happily. Cartridges are a lot cheaper then HP or Epsom but then again they're a lot smaller. The paper feeder and catcher feel quite plasticy and just sort of clip on but for $100 what do you expect. Remember you need a usb cable as well as this printer doesnt come with one.

199082 2003-12-10 20:57:00 Trev O, I think they are referring to cartridges, where you are referring to (refill) ink?

HP (and most other) printers have different cartridge types, and a new printer probably won't accept your old cartridge. However I suspect you dont have a working cartridge anyway, and thats whats driving you to a new printer.

Even where cartridges are physically similar, but different model numbers they can permanently damage the printer if you use the wrong one. (thermal resistor values are different and can damage the firing circuits in the printer)

Just don't assume you will be able to successfully or reliably refill cartridges. Its an art more than a science, and newer printers make it quite difficult.

Also be aware many printers come with "starter" cartridges when new, containing only a small amount of ink.

199083 2003-12-10 23:59:00 The 656 cartridges are around $50 each ($100, ie new printer), I definitely need a new black one and will need a colour one soon...
I bought refill ink for the 656 and then that cartridge then didn't work.

I have refilled the old epsom 440 before successfully a few times, but that did insist on cleaning itself every second time I used it, which took ages and wasted valuable ink (don't want to go there again)

The canon sounds good, although I don't see why i can't expect good colour prints. Thanks for that Barnabas
Anyone Know about the HP cheapy? That looks quite small too (good point)
Oh if anyone's interested the 656 was not bad print wise, but noisy and slow and too big.
how much ink each printer comes with is just the kind of info i'm looking for..!

thanks for the input everyone...

199084 2003-12-11 02:48:00 Be wary of the HP 3325 the cartridges are only about 10ml . Understand there are larger cartridges but they were never brought into NZ. The cartridges are HP 27 black and HP 28 colour . HP 27 refills (4 off) HP 28 refills (2 off each colour) are available at about $35 each Suggest check you can get new cartridges. FrankS (257)
199085 2003-12-11 07:04:00 Actually talking to someone just recently the Cannon ink tanks contain more than the HP ones. The reason you probably think they are smaller is because they are just ink tanks whereas the HP also contains the printhead in the cartridge. mikebartnz (21)
199086 2003-12-11 07:09:00 When Barnabas mention the colour print wasn't anything to write home about he was talking about a particular model not Cannon in general. Like most things if you want better quality pay more for it. mikebartnz (21)
199087 2003-12-11 09:19:00 Thanks mike, I thought that's what he meant and now am broadening my horizons towards $120 and the Canon s330
any thoughts??

199088 2003-12-11 11:15:00 Generic Canon ink carts are also readily available. My older (now) basic BJC2100 carts cost about $30 total for black and colour from a local supplier. Never had a problem with them.

I certainly recommend Canon for economic ink. Lexmark are the worse (colleague pays nearly $100 for Lexmark black cart!!)

199089 2003-12-11 11:39:00 Haven't got my latest price list and it is not listed in the previous one so can't realy advise yet. Tried a search on the net and was more inclined to get results for a camera. Bright of them to use s330 for both a camera and a printer. mikebartnz (21)
199090 2003-12-11 17:38:00 I got the comparisons from here (www.dealtime.com) ,which seemed to be as good as I could get..
I was steering clear of Lexmark for that reason (may have seen it here before) thanks Jester
Which pricelists are you waiting for mike?
