2013-08-24 21:20:00 | Just got this external HD from a friend, now. Its has a mind of its own, it clicks and clicks....then stops, successfully formatted, can save to HD. Is there a program I can use to troubleshoot/repair the HD? | mark1978 (13845) | |
2013-08-24 21:36:00 | Clicking is often a sign of a faulty drive and you cannot repair faulty HDDs with software. BUT - being an external drive, the clicking could be caused by the case or power supply. You can troubleshoot if the problem is with the case\power supply or drive itself. Take the HDD out of the case and connect it inside your computer directly, see if you get the same problems. You can also run SMART analysis software - sometimes while the drive is in the case, sometimes not: it all depends on the design - and check health of the drive.

2013-08-24 23:21:00 | There are several programs you can use. I often use SpeedFan which has SMART reporting ability. You can also take analysis online of the values which is useful. | Agent_24 (57) | |

You may have to remove the drive from its case and connect it directly to the motherboard. | wainuitech (129) | ||

2013-08-26 06:17:00 | SMART might not reliably predict all failures but if it does tell you there's something wrong it's very unlikely to be incorrect. Some SMART warnings show up due to outside influences however, like faulty cables, bad power supplies etc.
