2013-02-18 21:49:00 | You will have seen and heard about the plan by three large telcos to build a new cable to Australia. Telecom, Telstra and Vodafone. They plan to have it up and running by the middle or end of next year ! This is good news in many represents but bad news in one. As Paul Brllsen points out that one of the 3 owners - Telecom already has a share in the Pacific Data Cable so would they be all for competetion ? What do you think ?

2013-02-18 21:52:00 | Can't say there's a huge need for it. I'm already getting 32ms on my DSL connection to my favorite Aus gaming servers. Data to Aus isn't super expensive compared with the US from what I understand, nor is a *lot* of content over there, although it could mean we can "leech off the back of Australia" when it comes to using some of their video streaming infrastructure / services? | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2013-02-18 22:02:00 | I might have an additional benefit for hosting and datacentres here in NZ... I see that the new cable will consist of 3 fibre pairs. Does anyone know why it will go in with such a (seemingly) small number of fibres?

2013-02-18 22:06:00 | Sorry I made an error my OP - The current cable is of course the Southern Cross Cable. And from the Herald's article.... "Last month, Southern Cross Cable, which counts Telecom as an owner, announced it would cut its capacity prices by a fifth."

2013-02-19 00:02:00 | but how can it be 3 large telco's - Telecom, Telstra and Vodafone. Vodafone purchased TelstraClear 4 months ago and even the brand name will "be eliminated" ... UPDATE Oct 30: Vodafone has completed its $840 million purchase of TelstraClear following Commerce Commission clearance yesterday. Vodafone and TelstraClear are now one business, operating as separate business units, with a strong focus on continuing to deliver a great experience to Vodafone and TelstraClear customers. Yesterday, Vodafone said TelstraClear would operate indpendently for an assessment period of five to six months. The TelstraClear brand would be eliminated within 18 months. www.nbr.co.nz why is it a "non binding" agreement? and what does that actualy mean lol Telecom, Vodafone and Telstra have signed a non-binding agreement to co-invest..... www.theaustralian.com.au

2013-02-19 00:22:00 | Telstra still exist in Australia.... Bevy, you seem to think this is a one way street? Seems like it might be used by a fair few NZ businesses owned by Aussies who hows their stuff in Aussie

2013-02-19 09:58:00 | If Telecom is involved, I imagine that they will do what they typically do. The partnership of two, already pretending to be three, will obviously be scrupulously fair in their dealings and pricing with smaller players in the business. I think it is time for a Tui. | R2x1 (4628) | |
2013-02-19 19:31:00 | Those CEO's are lying through their teeth. Read the article in today's Herald. One says to get competition you need two players. Well we have two players in our supermarkets and evreyone agrees that we need 3. We had two players in the mobile market fro 10 years and we were screwed by them. Simom Mouter from Telecom says we need this cable to give is safer connection if there was a problem with Southern Cross. But when it comes to connection with the USA it is not an issue ? (dur)
