1351678 2013-08-21 06:23:00 Is there any way of stopping Windows XP's search from looping after it's found what you want ?.

Yes I know there is a STOP button, but if one is called to the phone surely, the search has it's own stop requirement built in.

One learnt about for/next loops in Basic programming years ago !!

Ps. had a program called "Whereis" a long time ago which was a Dos program.

Use "everything search tool" instead - it sits in the tray and will find anything instantly - I've used it for years on XP, and I bet you wouldn't use windows search once you've used this lol

Hi Speedy, sorry about the delay in replying

Have located this 2nd reply:

"Show the hidden files and folders Rightclick C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf Click install. The required file is in ../I386 folder on
the XP CD"

But there is no Install response as suggested.

If that file has been corrupted, would it be worth while re-naming it and copying the original from the CD ?.

Ps. someone has left a "black copy of XP Pro SP2 CD" on it, in the original cd case that came with the pc.

Thanks cobber, that leaves Windos for dead. Almost as quick as Whereis too, but then there were not the number of files with old dos, eh.

We have an empty 98SE machine I might try it on, if it doesn't work we will toss the lot out to Molten Media along with other obsolete bits and pieces.

We will have to upgrade next year anyway as XP updates are gone burger.
