199560 2003-12-11 16:46:00 I'm building my computer up, I have EVERYTHING, today i got the CPU and all, I have everything EXCEPT for the graphics card & monitor. The monitor is ordered and arrives in one week, and the graphics card will be bought tommorow or the day after.

Anyway, I have a NEON cold cathode in my case, its all plugged in and all, and I'm friggin DYING to test it out. I can't wait till next week for the monitor. Anyway, all parts and brand new and all. My question is: Can, without the graphics card, I plug in the computer and turn it on, to try out the NEON? I can't see anything wrong with loading up a computer SANS graphics card - but this will be the FIRST TIME EVER it boots up, and I don't wanna make a silly mistake just cuz I'm impatient.

So - if you were me, would you plug it in now and boot it up to try out the neon, or wait for the graphics card?

199563 2003-12-11 18:34:00 You will most likely need a monitor plugged in to the machine on it's first bootup as this is where most problems occur - the first ever bootup. What this will enable you to do is ensure BIOS picks up everything on your system ok and it all looks neat, that BIOS can't detect something, or something is conflicting.

If that goes according to plan and nothings wrong then you can unplug the monitor which will be saying "No Disk or System Boot Error" (or something like that) and sit infront of your neon light to your hearts content.

Just don't forget that if you do have onboard graphics you will have to disable them in BIOS when your card arrives so I guess that gives you a reasonable excuse to temporarily use onboard?

199564 2003-12-11 18:35:00 Nah no onboard graphics, I got a good quality mobo. And it worked fine, made lots of beeping noises (to tell me there's no graphics card) but that's it. Mark Veldhuizen (2570)
199565 2003-12-11 18:55:00 Looks very impressive. But just what do the fancy lights do? If, as I suspect, they are just ornamental how much did they add to the price of the computer? :D JJJJJ (528)
199566 2003-12-11 18:58:00 My friend got it for me for my birthday, so I dunno. Mark Veldhuizen (2570)

199568 2003-12-11 19:28:00 Nice PC you got there.... :D

I would suggest if you try it again that you plug in the keyboard, and while it boots up, hold down a couple of buttons on the keyboard.

This will hopefully give it an error that the system will safely stop at, and wont go any further (Giving off a couple of beeps while its at it).

Means your PC is "on" but its sitting there doing precious little :-)
