2003-12-11 01:04:00 | I've recently acquired an MP3 collection of about 3000 songs (15gig ish). Note all the songs have their tags loaded with artist, album, title etc, and not all files are named in the same way i.e. some are <Track>-<Song>.mp3 and some have a heap of info in the file name I loaded all the tracks into Windows Media and it created a bucket load of folders and sorted some of the tracks for me (some of the folders have album covers?), however it has changed the names, and left me with about 2000 songs sitting in a general folder.. Is there an easy way of updating the tags and file names or sorting the random mess via some magic software?

First I used Masstagger to strip the existing tags then got it to "Guess values from filename" to tag them all. It takes a little experimenting to learn how to work it and get the results you want but does the job marvellously. It is a good idea to do a practice/trial run with some copies before doing a mass convert though, just in case it fubars. It also pays for the filenames to be nice and tidy first. |

2003-12-11 03:00:00 | Thanks for the info, I'll try and standardise the names of the files first, and then move onto the tags | Marlboro (4607) | |
2003-12-11 03:03:00 | That program i listed will do that, just select the tracks, what form you would like the file names in and it will do em all for you,. | metla (154) | |
2003-12-11 05:58:00 | You could try musicbrainz (www.musicbrainz.org/), it is like CDDB but identifies songs by the content so it works with MP3 I haven't had a chance to try it myself yet (no linux app, just a library), but it alteast sounds great.
