| 199508 | 2003-12-11 08:06:00 | XP SP2 beta within a week Microsoft is prepping Windows XP Service Pack 2 to be released into beta testing within a week, sources said . Service Pack 2, or SP2, expected to be delivered in finished form during the first half of 2004, is considered a significant Windows update because it offers enhanced security features and rolls up all the security patches and updates that have been released since the last service pack shipped in September 2002 . Sources familiar with the Service Pack 2 beta said the update offers Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) turned on by default, better patch detection and management features, changes in the way e-mail attachments are handled and support for the Security Configuration Wizard, planned for the first Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 due in the second half of next year, partners said . Microsoft is now in the 11th hour of final testing for the SP2 beta and aims to deliver it by Friday, sources said . However, Microsoft will hold off on the beta until late next week if the internal testing process uncovers a conflict, sources added . Full story here . Mystery patch blots Microsoft's fix-free month Microsoft apparently doesn't know when it plans to patch . The company scrambled on Wednesday morning to figure out why a patch had been issued through its Windows Update service, when the software maker had declared on Tuesday that it would not issue any fixes in December . The patch, for a flaw announced during its monthly fix bulletin in November, updates FrontPage extensions . It plugs a security hole that could allow malicious code to be run on a person's PC . On Wednesday morning, Microsoft discovered that a glitch in the patching process resulted in a November fix not being applied to some Windows XP computers . The same patch was sent out again via the Windows update service on Tuesday night . The company is still investigating why and how the patch was reissued . The original flaw occurs in Microsoft's FrontPage extensions and affects Windows 2000, Windows XP and Office XP . The security hole was rated as critical for all systems, except for original Windows XP installations that hadn't been upgraded with FrontPage Extensions 2002 . Full story here .
