199864 2003-12-12 15:42:00 I opened up my external cd writer and inside on top of a chip. There's some kind of white gooey creamy substance. It was there when i first opened it.WHAts the white stuff for?Something to do with heat? yingxuan (3330)
199865 2003-12-12 20:23:00 It could be a heat compound paste although you'd expect it'd have a heatsink on top of it, unless of course the chip is close to the metal casing, I think that writer may have had faults with the chip burning out so they needed a cheap fix for it.

The only other type of gooey stuff I can remember inside a CDROM drive would be the lubricant used on the gears but that is no where near the chips and if I recall correctly, it's green.

199866 2003-12-12 20:55:00 Could be tartare sauce....have you perchance been visiting any fission chip sites lately?
Cheers A.

199868 2003-12-12 22:20:00 it's generic silicon thermal transfer compound. it effectively uses the cdrom casing as a heatsink for the chips, it's not uncommon for several chips to be cooled this way whetu (237)
199869 2003-12-12 22:41:00 Just to add to Whetu, you should never be without a tube of it... it's quite effective, especially on chips on hard drives that sit close to the metal casing, I learnt the hard way when the chip cooked on the casing leaving black smolder marks. Although my fix wasn't the paste, it was actually cutting away the metal to give the hard drive that extra space so it wouldn't happen again. Kame (312)
199870 2003-12-13 00:56:00 Some of the thermal pastes are quite toxic.
Wash your hands well before eating.

199873 2003-12-13 04:24:00 Some of the older compounds used Lithium, which is poisonous. Later compounds don't have it. It was about 10 years ago they stopped, apart from specialist applications.
The compound is specially made to have good thermal transfer characteristics. Otherwise, the wife cold-cream would do just as well.
