199767 2003-12-12 07:02:00 Hi
I have a friend who wants me to fix their PC for them. The machine is a Windows ME machine 266MHz HP with plenty of Ram and plenty of Harddrive space. The error comes at startup when I try to load windows with windows protection error please restart. This does not occur in safemode and I don't seem to be able to resolve it.
Any ideas??

199768 2003-12-12 07:29:00 pjg54,

If the protection error does NOT list a device or file extension then you have bad RAM or possibly improperly seated RAM.. you need to check...

please post back...
Cheers, Babe.

199769 2003-12-12 22:39:00 I Have opened the case and removed the RAM stick by stick and made sure that there is no dust on the chips or slots. I haven't tried changing the positions of the sticks. Will this help? I have also noticed that some is pc100 and some pc133 (must be backward capable).
My last resort is to format and reinstall windows.

199770 2003-12-12 22:56:00 By the sounds of it, it could be a number of things.

You can run PC100 and PC133 RAM together, as long as you don't overclock the lower speed. It's possible that they are being overclocked if the CPU is running at 2x133. This may cause problems, but may not be related.

It could pinpoint to a device driver, any new hardware installed? The drivers may need updating. Another alternative is using msconfig, and loading each process seperately, e.g. load everything except one of the options and see if that works, you turn off each setting till it boots correctly, if it boots correctly when one of the settings is off then that would be a good place to start. The choices are System.ini, Win.ini, Static VxD and Startup.

Also check to make sure nothing is conflicting.

If your registry is corrupt means you should boot to DOS and run scanreg /restore.

Possible virus activity. So check it with an AV

199771 2003-12-12 23:17:00 Maybe you could go to the startup menu and try step by step confirmation? Don't know how this difers from the config.sys option. HTH mark c (247)
199772 2003-12-13 22:01:00 I have run it and disabled item by item the win.ini, system.ini etc... and none seem to work.
System has worked with all current RAM so I doubt whether that the RAM chips differing speeds is the problem. On a step by step confirmation the process hangs on msmouse.vxd but when loading with Static VxD disabled it still doesn't work.
Still scratching the head on this one. Might have to try plan B and format the drive.

199773 2003-12-13 22:50:00 Try going into safe mode. Look through device manger and check for doubled up devices. Leave the System listings alone though. I have found that if there are multiple listings, delete the lot and after restart, windows will pick them up.

Finish up with a registry clean using something like easycleaner. (only use the registry cleaner in this program to be safe).

199774 2003-12-14 06:18:00 i would be VERY suprised if it's RAM since it dont occur in safe mode.......well safe mode also uses RAM (LOL)

get to safe mode then hit startbutton/run and ty[pe in

msconfig

then hit enter

thru this lovely windoze app you can modify yoru startup .......it''ll be no doubt a device driver conflict somewhere so play around with msconfig.....and try to isolate what is causing the prob

199775 2003-12-16 06:31:00 The werid thing is I started it in safemode and ran msconfig and one by one disabled system.ini,win.ini,static VxD and startup items and each time it wouldn't run except in safemode. Got me puzzled. Tried to reinstall windows straight over the existing version but encountered problems with that as well. Well bugger me its come right as I type. Must have done something right!! Until next time it buggers up!!
Thanks all
