200007 2003-12-13 21:14:00 It wasn't that long ago that computer would have been considered quite high tech and top of the range. And probably over twice the price Baldy (26)
200008 2003-12-13 21:24:00 Interesting thread....

I'm looking at spending $3500.00 on a new PC next February, and the biggest problem I have it where to spend my hard-earned $$$$$

I've taught myself enough about PC's in the last 2-3 months to get by, but have no idea where I should go to purchase.

I was looking at Dell (but NEVER from The Warehouse), but have been told their desktops aren't all that flash, and went to Quay Computers in Wellington yesterday and the "Entertainer" system looked perfect, but they lost my business after leaving me walking around their tiny store for 25 minutes and no-one asking me "can I help?".

Harvey Norman in Porirua currently seem to be the best bet......

Well how else do you cut the price down.
Some people simply don't need a 3Ghz 1024MB 80GB AGP x8 slotted monster pc. Its great to be able to tell your friends that you have a new 3GHz pc but you have to pay for it (no deposit, 6 months deferred payment anyone).
I would expect that if Dell used poor quality components they would have gone out of business years ago. The pc industry is a pretty tough industry to survive in.

I'd put Harvey Norman just above the Warehouse and Farmers for a place to buy a PC.

Quay have a good reputation, not the cheapest but good after sales service.

Ascent (http://www.ascent.co.nz/), similar to Quay.

Atech (http://www.atech.co.nz/) another good Welly store.

AquilaTech (www.aquilatech.co.nz) I've had excellent service from them and are reasonably priced depending on the product line.

Infinite (www.infinite.co.nz) is another Welly one to check out.

Someone else may have some usefull comments re these stores. If you want some more post back.

200012 2003-12-14 00:53:00 My experience of computers spans the last 7 years. Work related and only caught my interest in the last year or so.

Anyway my 2 cents is that the reliability of service back-up for later problems and advice is just as important as the computer itself. Price is third behind quality and service.

Buying from a specialist tech shop where the people are enthusiasts, and are on first name terms with you, is the best decision you could make.

200013 2003-12-14 01:02:00 Agreed, which is why I would never buy anything more expensive than a 10c Chup-a-Chup from The Warehouse.

The search shall continue.

200014 2003-12-14 03:49:00 Hi all
Well I don't know why they are still advertising them. If the other Ware Whare stores are anything like the one we have here, they sold all they had in stock by lunchtime Saturday (42 if I remember right). I saw people walking out with more than one as well. Even if they are not the top of the line, I dare say some parents are going to be very popular this xmas when the kids wake up and find a computer under the tree. I dare say that we will see people who purchased them around this forum in the not too distant future at which point we will learn first hand what they think of the new computers.

These so called cheaper options are the left over crap from PC Company ... good luck ...
