2003-12-13 07:11:00 | I too don't think that Dell or the Warehouse deserve to be slagged off . There is certainly nothing wrong with Dell, one of the better name brands IMO and probably a little less prorietary than some . There is nothing wrong with the Warehouse either, I've bought plenty of stuff from the Warehouse Stationary store in Petone including printer, scanner, CD's, etc, nothing has ended up in the dump, so far, we also recycle any waste printer paper I buy from there . For myself, I would not touch it, even for spare parts and especially not with a Celeron . That may have more to do with my own bias towards building my own (apart from the Celeron bit) and the enjoyment I get from that process from selecting the components to firing it up and using it . And I suspect that is the same for some others here, a certain snobbery towards store bought "standard" systems . It depends on what rocks your socks . Cheers Murray P I'd still build a better system than a brand PC anyday . More stable too, once I had fried the bad bits out of it . Merry Xmas all

This forum is inhabited by geeks, enthusiasts, hobbyists etc and not by the ordinary folks who go out to buy a "computer" for what is usually Email,Internet and a few letters. Don't sling off at their choice - it may have much more grunt than they need and thus meets their requirements. Cheers Tony |

2003-12-13 09:08:00 | One last post from me on the subject... I disagree with international companies such as dell operating at a loss just to gain market share...The spin-offs are all negative. And yeah, not bad for a thousand bucks,be better if it had a duron in it though.

2003-12-13 09:30:00 | Want a cheaper option? $899 from Auckland or Hamilton Building Depot, in the NZ Herald. Don't know about specifications though. What is up with everybody selling PCs now... looks like I should start a company.. any legal age? Hehe...

2003-12-13 11:22:00 | Ok, seeing as everyone else is having fun I might as well join in with my 2 cents.....or 99 cents (it is the warehouse after all) Correct me if I'm wrong but dells guide to building a low end pc........... 1.use a seemingly fast processor. 2.skimp on ram, hard drive space 3.give you XP and maybe even a restore disc (RUN AWAY NOW!) 4. Bundle it with other Microsoft junk 5.Give you a $5 and say that it is a system feature 6.Intergrated graphics....... first off all of those shiny buttons in XP take up some ram, give 32 - 64meg for graphics and you have one sluggish XP machine. 7. Use hyperbole "HUGE!" you wont be able to play any games bareably on this pc, shop around. Just dont goto the warehouse!

2003-12-13 11:32:00 | I wouldn't touch that thing with a 10 foot barge pole no matter who I was, or how much money I had! Neither would I Compaq or HP. RIP OFFS!!!! Custom built is by far the best way to go. There's one middle man... not 6! It's not that hard to build your own computer if you were to do it yourself either.

2003-12-13 11:44:00 | I totally agree with Baldy and Megaman Personally, I have found Dell systems to be of the highest craftsmanship and couldnt recommend a better PC Vendor! I have had 1 out of MANY Dell PC's that have passed my way go bung, and it was a dead Motherboard. The Motherboard was replaced later that afternoon with a brand new one at no extra cost. On-site too...! Admittedly, the Shared Video RAM is a draw-back, but a minor one at that which is easy to over-look provided you wont be playing any 1st person shooters at a high res. You _might_ be able to squeeze out full detailed settings at 640x480 dependant on just What chipset it is etc. As for a Floppy Drive, I havent honestly used one in about 2 months now. Dont have one in my PC, and couldnt care less. CD's last longer and are much faster to transfer to, holding many times more data! To be honest, if I were to recommend somebody purchase a pre-built PC, it would undoubtedly be Dell, followed second by Acer or Toshiba. They are a reputable brand that I would stand by! Provided you dont want to play the latest games (Although the likes of Age of Mythology etc should still work) then you should be sweet really :-) Chill.

2003-12-13 11:50:00 | BTW - Just for the record, a 2.4Ghz Celeron would be MORE than sufficient for around 80% of home users. I'd love to see how many people here would be able to max out a 2.4Ghz Celeron for more than 5 minutes a day!! (This does not include system crashes because you're using an OS that still doesnt know how to use the CPU and RAM efficiently!) Im willing to bet that not many people here do. Sure 3D gaming requires a good processor, but not that great..! I had two mates go out an buy a GeForce 4 MX 400 about 6 months back as an upgrade for their current cards. One had a 2.6Ghz P4, the other had a 933 Celeron. Guess what? They both scored the same fps in Unreal Tournament with graphics at Max detail running at 1024x768@32Bit. This goes to show that an extra 1.66Ghz doesnt make a world of difference for the type of games this system will be able to handle with its current Graphics card! I have a Celeron 933Mhz with onboard SiS (636 chipset I think - 32MB Shared) and it runs at about 6-7 fps at 640x480 with max detail. Surely onboard VGA has progressed since the motherboard was made in 2001!?!?!
