199977 2003-12-13 05:13:00 Talk about a bunch of knockers.
As for companies falling over...if a sole trader has an accident or sick..where is your fast repair or indeed if serious enough, dies..warranty? There are also businesses out there that are selling "crap" computers to people.

I notice in the trade-me, alot of systems contain no operating system...so add on $200 to the price.
Again, no warranty from 2nd hand.

You guy's & Gals may be proficient in computers, but there are others out there that just want to surf, e-mail and store digital camera pictures. Ideal system for them. Dell has a good reputation here and overseas and is very unlikely to vacate these shores after surviving PC Company and Gateway competition.

It's "horses for courses" thing. The vast majority of my domestic clients, would not stress the Dell at all, with the use they put on their computers.

199979 2003-12-13 05:23:00 I do think some of you are a bit tough . David asks a fair question . He is doing his homework by asking . You could spend weeks on the Web trying to get a handle on computer systems ; and still be confused .

For what it is worth, we have a new Compaq D530 Celeron 2 . 4 at work and it is great . Super fast for us . It replaced a 400mhz HP Brio which was still performing well . Does word processing, accounting, and web browsing . No complaints .

>P . S . This fact is not intended to be used to discriminate Warehouse, or >their goods, but . . . . did you know? . . . it only takes 30 days on average >for goods from the Warehouse to end up in the landfill!

SY - this is what is known as a truism . It looks true so the reader thinks it must be, and therefore anything from the Warehouse must fall to pieces in 30 days .

But this statement is false . It misleads . I could tell you that it takes 5 . 276 days for anything from Pak'n'Sav to end up in the landfill . So what? That doesn't mean the product lines are rubbish . Simply that they are consumables . Same with a lot of the Warehouse lines, such as toys, which are cheap and basically disposable . They are not expected to last longer than a few days or weeks but at the price, this is acceptable .

So David, I wouldn't consider this machine a risky buy .

However if I was you, I would consider buying a locally made computer from a reputable geek . Or an upgrade box . Ask the members here who they would recommend - perhaps in a new thread .

Good luck

Here is a straight answer . it is perfect for your needs . dell is a company with a good reputation . the w'house is famous for being cheap . sure you can get better models for more money but at the end of the day do u need it all? this is model is good for your needs . the only thing that would make it sweeter would be if it was a laptop ;)

199982 2003-12-13 05:46:00 But hang on. The advert says HUGE 17" monitor.

What is the difference between my 17" monitor and a HUGE 17" monitor???? :-)

The other thing I don't like about the advert is that near the bottom it says, "next business day ON-SITE service***" Read further down and see that that is not available in some locations please contact Dell for details."

Having said that.... Dell is generally a good reliable brand ( or has been in the past ). Where you may run into trouble is if you want an upgrade like more RAM, AGP dedicated etc. Bear in mind that the onboard video will use some of that 256 Megs too.

Bear in mind that I'm not knocking Dell here. Good reliable brands that come to my mind are Compaq, HP, Dell, IBM, Compucon etc.

In my humble opinion you would be better off going to a local PC maker who has been in business for a while. If the PC you decide to buy cost a bit more in the first place it may be money well spent.

199983 2003-12-13 05:51:00 yeh im not concerned about that on-site issue because im in welly, but that is something others may need to check, another thing i was wondering about is that there is no mention of a floppy drive?

dave.
_david_ (3309)
199984 2003-12-13 06:06:00 didn't notice the lack of a floppy drive lol but well ........i recall reading some time agon that dell was considering not putting floppy drives into their puters............well really they are not that necessary if you gotta cd writer are they ?..................

I reckon that puter is fairly reasonable for the price............

and ...........someone said...........cheap ram/cheap mobo/unknown brand modem etc etc...........well someone else said.....hey dell is ok brand name and I'll agree with that second person........hell for $999 you'd be pushed to build a similar model with xp installed and 17" monitor etc etc.............well a friend just bought one of those dells and I'm a tech so i'll be keepin an eye on what the story is ..................I was gonna build her a puter but I did tell her I thought that the dell for that price was probably ok............and I'd stand by that.........sure if you want gaming etc you may want a fancy video card .......but well she's just yoru average user who emails/ surfs/ word processes etc.........and who the hell needs all that fancy stuff ...........jeez I only just built myself a goodish puter for the first time.......didn't need a fancy one before and really what I got now is far better than I need to use........

make that a double. not the most cheapest but close enof. tech supercedes anyway ... one that is $300 *faster* in my opinion is not worth considering given how fast tech flies....

Not always the case. At work I have onboard graphics, and we are running high-end mapping applications which wouldn't run well on many of todays graphics cards, yet they run fairly well with onboard video. But it is still a case of you get what you pay for - I'm guessing the machines we've got with onboard at work were still quite costly, and a portion of that cost would have been the onboard.
