Why buy new, when you can inherit problems second hand for the same prices. Sheesh

199969 2003-12-13 04:30:00 David do you have a current system with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc . If so consider an upgrade box . You could get one off the shelf for as little as $450 550 or there abouts with similar or better specs . I agree to a certain extent with metla, Celeron's suck except in corporate/business environments were they are asked to perform limited functions, ie, not much more than a network box (that's what they were designed for and the mass cheapy OEM market) .

It seems to me that you are looking for a general all-round system that can do most things for you without being overly stressed or annoying about getting the job done . This, IMO, calls for something that can do a little more than run a word processor and surf, and therefor some features will seem superfluous until you strike something you only will ever do occasionally but, when it comes to the crunch the comp will do badly or flat out refuse to cooperate if you skimp at this point in your decision .

IMO, if cost is an overriding consideration, you'd be better off with a slightly slower cpu but a P4, XP + or even a Duron on a goodish motherboard and ramp up the ram and graphics or add them in as you go along and funds allow . At least with an socket A motherboard you can swap in any later model AMD CPU . Celeron you have the choice of Celeron or P111 socket 370 so your limited as to aged or choked CPU range .

OT: On the subject of country of manufacture . It does have a bearing on quality . Even the fine details of the components can change even though the spec's are presumably the same . Most companies have a definition spec by which the components are made . However there are many variables, for eg; the manufacturing plant itself, the quality, age, cleanliness, maintenance of its plant and skills of the workers, storage and handling of components and finished products, climate, transport . If you've ever had say, two T-shirts that look exactly the same but made in different locations or factories . One will last years the other one will be stuffed after a few washes . Almost invariably the one that cost more will last longer, unless you paid good money for a cheap ripoff label .

Well, do a bit of homework! I'm just letting you know that quality can change, and no more. I'm never going to point to one as to where to look for, you can decide yourself!

If all you want to do is basic office type of stuff + light gaming, a Pentium will probably do you fine. If that's all your going to do, I'd consider $999 a rip-off. Again, personal opinion. I don't believe in buying proper world-known brand names. Also, I'd never buy 'investment' materials from Warehouse. If you got $999, and don't mind about the brand name, then you could probably get a better machine elsewhere.

But again, go for it if you got plenty of resources to spare, i.e. time and money.

P.S. This fact is not intended to be used to discriminate Warehouse, or their goods, but.... did you know?... it only takes 30 days on average for goods from the Warehouse to end up in the landfill!

More fool you. Who wants someone elses discard, when for less than $200 you can have something unused. And probably hammered

199973 2003-12-13 04:38:00 Even a second hand system is likely to be built with better quality components then that dell,(provided one knows what to look for)And im not referring to game performence.

Always have a hard time finding chipset drivers for these propierty systems and there unheard of motherboards and modems, not to mention the poor monitors, worst quality ram on the market, small power supplies,3rd rate modems, slow noisy harddrives.....

The troubles assiated with anysort of upgrade, the phone helpline, the money going offshore, the fact that a simple software glitch may result in the machine being packed up and sent away to god-knows where for who knows how long to get repaired.Couple that with the very worst cpu on the market, gees, what a deal.

Would any of you buy the cheapest house on the market, just because its cheap?Let alone tell someone else its a good deal?...hell,it will keep the rain off,it does everything you want....

LMFAO at you.I would happily pay $8000 for that system provided it worked as advertised,i wouldnt on the other hand pay $200 all up for that dell.

199976 2003-12-13 05:04:00 Different strokes for different folks, but I like new things. Also if I was to recommend a PC to someone I'm sure they'd like the warranty aspect of things. -=JM=- (16)
