199937 2003-12-13 01:25:00 as you would have all seen the warehouse are offering a Dell computer package for $1000. just wondering what y'all think about this and is it a good option for a general use home computer, bit of gaming bit of word processing bit of surfing.

Dell dimension 2400:
2.4GHz intel celeron processor
256MB memory DDR SDRAM
40GB hard drive
48x speed cd writer
17'' screen
mouse etc
modem
XP home
works 7.0

With the works it says included word 2002, i thought works had its own word processor?

cheers.

199938 2003-12-13 01:33:00 You know,in a recent comparison the 1.6 duron cpu spanked the living daylights out of a celeron 2.6,If i can find the link ill drop it in here. metla (154)

And a little cut and paste from the article

As we can see by the graph, all the AMD processors performed better at this test than any of the Intel CPUs. What's also important to note is that a score of a 10.0 here is about the performance level of a 1GHz Pentium III, which should help you put the Celeron's performance in perspective.

Lame,very lame

199941 2003-12-13 01:58:00 I don't know where you live, so hard to give correct advice.
If you're in Auckland there are reputable dealers, who can give you a better deal for cash sale, more bang for your bucks.
If in another area, look around, you will be surprised at the offers you can get, still with full warranty.

199942 2003-12-13 01:59:00 I think they're buying in bulk, i.e. not assembled by Dell in New Zealand

It reads on the side, "Made in China". Expect what you pay for... I will say no more

199943 2003-12-13 02:02:00 i work at the slavehouse and they're probably alright for typing, surfing etc. Everything else is crap, a duron based system would probably be cheaper as well ;)

199944 2003-12-13 02:07:00 Hi david the answer to your question would be yes.

It is a good buy for someonr who would use it for general home use, a bit of gaming, word processing & surfing the net. It's not the best of systems but it will get the job done, depending ont he chipset you may find that the graphicsperformance might be a bit sub standard, and because the display adapter uses system memory you may find that XP will tend to run slower.

I suggest maybe to enquire a little more as to whether there are any upgrade options available, like adding more RAM to the system. Find out if the motherboard has a sepaerate AGP slot in addition to the onboard video adapter, if not it will limit future and maybe even current game playability.

If you are not wanting to spend too much then I'd say go for it, you can always upgrade the system later.

Hope that helps
cheers

199945 2003-12-13 02:08:00 im in wellington, was thinking bout Atech as an option. Dell has been doing a lot of advertising lately and i was surprised to see them at the warehouse. will continue my quest. _david_ (3309)
199946 2003-12-13 02:16:00 He's not after what you think of the processor, that is irrelevant.

That PC should be fine for most uses, the latest games wouldn't run at the highest settings, but other than that it should be plenty.

I think you'll find that you are buying from the warehouse though, not from dell. As last I knew dell only sold via the web.
