199913 2003-12-13 01:13:00 Hi All,

A bit of an issue with my machine here: It freezes periodically (4-6 times per day) - there is no stop message, no BSOD, the screen just freezes. The keyboard and mouse cease to respond.

(A Compaq Presario S3010 - AMD Athalon XP 2000+ with 128 MB Ram... XP Home OS, service pack 1)

The Event viewer logs - "
Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 1 Uniprocessor Free.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at go.microsoft.com
"

- at the time of shutdown. Apparently this is what is usually logged when a user CTRL+ALT+DELs and shutsdown, but this appears to happen all on it's own.

This doesn't appear to be related to any specific application, and can happen when the PC is unattended or being used.

Any Ideas?

half the problem to start with. upgrade your ram when you can afford it.

check what programs you have running in the background. as check out the spyware faq.

199915 2003-12-13 01:29:00 Sounds like spyware, combined with too little RAM.
XP Pro requires 256 MB RAM at least, to be efficient.
XP Home will work OK with 128 MB, but better with more, of course.
Suggest you try the following free applications - get all the updates for each application:
Spybot S&D (Search and Destroy) don't forget to also use the "immunize" settings
AdAware from Lavasoft
SpywareGuard from Javacool
Spyware Blaster from Javacool
This should get rid of a lot of junk.
Then instal:
Internet Sweeper (by Brett Emory) - it's free but you can pat Brett a wee donation and he will give you a weblink for the NO nag version. (He on-sold later to Aladdin software)
There are other security software apps too.
What antivirus are you running ?
What Firewall do you use ? and settings
Do you run AntiTrojan software ?

199916 2003-12-13 01:32:00 ...yes, I know the 128Mb is low, but these are work machines, designed to run just one program plus internet access. My office has two of these, and the other behaves itself, although is slow.

after reading the temperature threads, I notice my crashing machine has a CPU temp of 57 and my non-crashing (identical spec) machine is sitting at 51 degrees.

IS this likely to be related, do you think?

199917 2003-12-13 01:34:00 Cavity - cross posted there.

Am checking with Lavasoft adaware now.

I run Zonealarm (free edition) always on all machines. My anti virus ran out two weeks ago .......

199918 2003-12-13 01:42:00 The temp may well be the problem, theres not much leeway there for the temp of that machine to rise before causing problems.

Lack of ram certainly wont be making the system crash, but it may be contributing by asking all the other components to work harder thus creating more heat which could lead to a lock.

199919 2003-12-13 01:44:00 Adaware reports one registry key - alexa software. Don't know how it got there, but A) It's gone now and B) I don't see this crashing the machine... jaxson (3204)
199920 2003-12-13 02:05:00 sounds like the crashing pc hasn't had some of the windows updates done. the higher temps could just be slightly incorrect readings or a background program (mayby virus) running. tweak'e (174)
199921 2003-12-13 03:01:00 I doubt that the Alexa would have had anything to do with it.

Could it be a rouge driver?!
