199683 2003-12-12 01:03:00 Hi folks
I scanned a photo to my pictures which I want to send in an email to friends. To make sure I did everything correctly I created an email and sent the photo, as an attachment, to myself.

However when it was being received by me in OE it showed "receiving 3 messages". The first one came into my "inbox" and was perfect. The subject stated "Photos saved 0001. JPG (1/2)"

The other two were sent straight to my "deleted" items. When I click on them there and try to open the attachment I get a message -
"You are attempting to open a file of type (.dat)
These files are used by the operating system and by various programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system"

Why is this happening and how can I stop it.
Thanks
Smithie

199684 2003-12-12 03:05:00 How big are the images you are trying to send? stu140103 (137)
199685 2003-12-12 03:11:00 The original . JPG is probably a very big file . The email softawre seems to have split it up into smaller pieces . This is because enormous emails cause problems .

Your email recieving software is being conservative about accepting the picture segments because of their type . . . and you could probably change the security settings to make it accept them . But . . . it would be better to get the file sent in one piece .

I'd get the picture with some programme and use the various options to save a version which is a reasonable size --- say less then 500kB . Then you should be able to send it without problems .

199686 2003-12-12 04:01:00 Hi
Thanks Stu and Graham. I have discovered that all attachments sent by email are having the same problem. I sent one that was to be opened by windows media and when received it showed 14 messages coming in and then 13 went straight to the deleted items.
I have run Nortons scan and that shows nothing infected.
Rang my technician and he said it must be a setting somewhere and will have a check next week.
Just as a matter of interest the photos were showing as 118KBs in my inbox.

I consider 150kb to be the absolute maximum size for photos that I send and usually aim for under 100kb . Some quality is lost but it is not all that noticeable .

Note that if the pictures are going to be printed out they will need to be of higher resolution/larger file size but 500kb would be the maximum .

199688 2003-12-12 04:40:00 Smithie, are you sending your emails as Rich Text (HTML)? If so, try sending one as Plain Text format with the picture as an attachment and see what happens. Susan B (19)
199689 2003-12-12 04:42:00 With Outlook Express, you can send large messages or files to e-mail and news servers that have size limits, by breaking the messages into smaller ones .

When the group of messages is received, the e-mail program combines them into one message .

On the Tools menu, click Accounts .

On either the Mail or News tab, click Properties .

On the Advanced tab, select the Break apart messages larger than x KB
check box and then enter the maximum file size the server will allow .

199691 2003-12-12 05:07:00 Thanks Smithie38, and you have a great Xmas too.

That text I gave above came straight from Outlook Express Help, by the way.

These, and many other little complications that users simply don't need are among the reasons I won't use OE, so I can't call on experience in this software.

199692 2003-12-12 07:07:00 Go to Tools/Options/security and uncheck the bits that refers to deleting anything which may be a virus .... An MS update caused this funny.

Cheers Tony
