200283 2003-12-14 00:31:00 I've got a PC currently running windows xp.

When I first installed xp the pc loaded in about 30 seconds.

A few months down the line the pc is sitting at the blue "Welcome" screen
For several minutes before it plays the "welcome to windows" music and my desktop comes up.

I've done the usual things - defrag -scan disk - also ran norton system works and cheacked for any possiable spyware or usless programs that may be loading.

I'm running out of ideas
Any thoughts?

200284 2003-12-14 01:32:00 gidday,

there may be a program that is starting when booting your computer,
click start, run, type msconfig, click the startup tab, usually near the
bottom check to see what programs are starting, remove the
tick from any you dont need to start, and click ok.

You will need to restart.

good luck,

Robby

200287 2003-12-14 10:21:00 Yeah, mine too compucon.
Just started lasy week before the monitor let off smoke.
It happened overnight. No new programs installed, msconfig still the same.
I wonder if one of the latest windows updates is making it hang.
Used to load really quick, now waits forever on the Welcome screen.
Will be interested to see if it has only just happened to other users.
Waiting with baited breathe ...

Its been happening on my Family's PC for a while now, and was an over-night thing just like yours.

We've since applied all windows patches (was completely unpatched before), removed EVERYTHING but the bare essentials from boot, virus scan, spyware/trojan scanned...
Yet its still slow as anything on a PC where it should run fine (Celeron 933Mhz w/192MB RAM).

Ive personally left the family to put up with it (I dont use that PC so it doesnt bother me ;\) for the time being, but if there is an outcome of this thread, then I will be greatly interested!

Chill.

I feel a conspiracy coming on.

200290 2003-12-14 16:22:00 I can't help your problem, but for what it's worth it takes me 35 seconds from "press the start button" untill fully loaded. I only have Norton a/v and pc alert running at start up.
I have noticed that if I have "Open Office" and the other stuff that Office puts in start menu it slows start up down by about 10 seconds.

200291 2003-12-22 16:08:00 Mine too. I have an Athlon XP 1800, with 512 Mb ram and 64 Mb video card and XP Home Ed. installed. Started some weeks ago and occurs frequently but not all the time. Takes almost 30-45 seconds just to log into my account and another 10-20 seconds for the icons to show up on the desk top.

Have tried regular weekly tune-ups with Registry 1st Aid, RegCleaner, Spybot, Adaware, AVG antivirus ... but it seems to have made no difference. I have also found the XP's Cleandisk, when started, hangs at 10% and I've left it on for a few hours to see if moves, but nothing.

I update Windows and all the tune-up programs etc regularly. Should I be worried? Anyone know the possible causes?

200292 2003-12-22 20:22:00 Here's a solution for those having issues with Windows XP Clean Disk utility

{You may wish to backup/save the registry BEFORE attempting this}

To speed up Windows XP's CleanDisk do the following:

Click START | RUN and in the run window type Regedit and click OK
Navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches\Compress Old Files" key
Delete everything in the right-hand side of the registry pane for that key...
Close Regedit and Reboot your PC
Now run Disk Cleanup

Cheers, Babe.
