200140 2003-12-13 09:10:00 Excuse my ignorance but was wanting to clarify exactly what Sun Solaris 9 is.
Is it just simply an alternative O/S or is it an O/S that comes packaged with a thousand & one other programmes as in most Linux distros??

200141 2003-12-13 09:15:00 Yes, it is an operating system - Sun's verion of Linux, according to Mike. :-) Susan B (19)
200142 2003-12-13 09:46:00 Sorry Susan B it is Sun's version of Unix and from what I understand it is a bit of a Rolls Royce. Big and heavy but very reliable. mikebartnz (21)

And probably not that many programs available for it for the average home user ;)

200145 2003-12-13 10:19:00 I could be wrong here but I think a lot of Linux programs will run in Unix. mikebartnz (21)
200146 2003-12-13 10:22:00 And not at all recommended for the home user. My last experience with Solaris was that you needed to be a rocket scientist to install the damn thing.

I feel that the Solaris x86 code is still a little raw though. Solaris has it's roots with the Sparc processor, and several years ago Sun decided to jump on the bandwagon and port Solaris to x86.

You're probably right - I have no idea, I haven't tried it :)

200148 2003-12-13 10:28:00 You can get binary compatibility libraries that allow you to run Linux, BSD and Unix programs on each other.

Complications can arise however because Unix variants use different file system hieracies and directory structures. ayou can force most programs to run, but program may not run as intended or you may compromise you rsystems security.

Please excuse the spelling, it's late and I'm tired :)
