200132 2003-12-13 08:23:00 Hello im just curious but if you had a real crappy like $30 modem and got a good like $50+ or however much good modems cost modem, would you notice much more difference in your internet speed?

200133 2003-12-13 08:51:00 You can get a cheap internal modem for about $40 and a good external rural modem for abot $300 and a standard external modem for about $110.
The external modems are real modems eg. they don't use software for some of their functions. you are also less likely to get dropped connections because of line noise especially with the rural modem.
As to your question yes you would get a slightly better speed but you would also get greater reliability which is probably almost more important.

200134 2003-12-13 10:55:00 depends on you pc and what you use it for. with online gaming a true hardwatre modem is bestas every last cpu power is being used for the game not wasted on running a modem.

also with poor lines a hardware modem is a lot better. with good lines there is no difference in speed (unless you often surf while doing other cpu intensive tasks).

general. most hardware ones are. 'good' software ones are cheaper. the cheapest are winmodems.

easy way is to see how fast your net connection is. it givea a general idea of how good the lines are, assuming isp and your pc are ok.
