| 201040 | 2003-12-16 08:35:00 | never having used the net to buy anything, as i am reluctant to give my credit card details away, am curious about it - with the favourable exchange rate on most currencies it seems like i'm missing out on some bargains - my question is, is there some sort of secure site, maybe like a broker, where cheques or monies or credit card info can be sent so that any goods purchased would reside safely and the site would arrange payment? does this convey the message? | jayal (1291) | ||
| 201041 | 2003-12-16 08:53:00 | My advice is to only use a credit card on a site that displays the small padlock on your status bar (normally right hand bottom). I learnt recently that you should also click on it and it confirms that it is legimate. Failing to do this would void any any chance of making a claim to credit card company if you do need to make a claim. Like any purchase though there are always going to be risks as fair trading laws here NZ do not apply overseas so making a claim due to false or misleading advertising does not apply. This is just a couple of the rules that I apply to myself when making a purchase, and this info I think I gleaned from consumer.org.nz and my credit card company website as well. sam m |

There should be a clear returns policy listed and who to contact in case of problems. One thing I normally do when buying off the net, is to send an general email enquiry about the product and see how long they take to reply. Don't forget to check out what the P & P to New Zealand is as well, as this can be quite costly and you may find your bargin is no longer one with the final bill. If you think you may buy off the net regularly, get a second credit card just with a small limit which you can use for such purchases. |

Some sites start secure but re-direct you through an in-secure portal.... ..But just because there's not a lil padlock (Closed) in the status bar of your browser doesnt mean that somebody _IS_ watching you... ;-) |

| 201044 | 2003-12-16 09:57:00 | what are u actually after if your going to trade online? if ur after 2nd hand things, go to www.trademe.co.nz but if brand new and international, i'd go with amazon.com and as chilling says, its best to go to websites by typing them in for example www.amazon.com than going via links in emails or anything in emails... good luck and enjoy ur experience trading/buying online if you do go for it :-) i also think some banks offer security if payments go wrong? or is that only for ppl who have had cards stolen and used? |
