201614 2003-12-19 02:08:00 I'm running Windows XP PRO SP1 with all the recommended patches. Also running Nortons AntiVirus 2003 with the latest updates.

Recently 'infected' with a known trojan - Nortons quarantined this.
Recently de-installed new.net 'spyware' (although Adaware cannot completely remove it).

Have completely lost TCP/IP.
Don't know what caused this but I suspect the trojan.

Can dial out, but cannot connect - internet, email, Nortons, etc.

How do I re-install TCP/IP ?

201615 2003-12-19 02:11:00 try disabling nortorn first. ilikelinux (1418)
201616 2003-12-19 02:22:00 Done that - disabled Nortons, Adaware & my ZoneAlarm firewall also.

But TCP/IP is not a de-install/install option anywhere that I can see.
So, the question is, how do I get Win XP to reinstall TCP/IP ?

Do I need to physically remove my modem card & disable my network card for XP to realise it doesn't need the associated software?

Or is there an easier way ?

201617 2003-12-19 03:04:00 Are you saying that when you right click on the adapter (network or dial-up) and select properties, that the "install" button is no longer accessible? godfather (25)
201618 2003-12-19 03:05:00 Yes, it's greyed out ... Belmont (5017)
201619 2003-12-19 03:28:00 In Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system; therefore, it is not possible to uninstall TCP/IP in Windows XP. Jim B (153)
201620 2003-12-19 03:29:00 with XP you can't remove tcp/ip. you can only reset it back to how it was on install. MS has instructions. but before doing that go through the spyware FAQ. make sure you get ALL spyware removed. tweak'e (174)
201621 2003-12-19 03:30:00 I know, I know, that's the frustrating thing

but there must be a way ...
... or do I have to re-install Windows XP

201622 2003-12-19 03:49:00 if resetting tcp/ip dosn't work then reinstall is the only way. unfortunatly this sometimes happpens when spyware dosn't get uninstal properly. tweak'e (174)

There are instructions in the forum's Spyware FAQ #8b for getting rid of new.net and other spyware. Link to FAQs top right of this page.
