| 201389 | 2003-12-18 05:12:00 | hey, my mrs has a newish computer under a 5 year warranty, she purchased it through farmers and its a pc company computer. ive been told that opening it up should void the warranty, only if i put in parts that didn't originally come with it and they don't work, then those parts wont be covered but the rest still will. there has recently been a problem with the video card which happened after carrying the computer, i wanted to open it up to see if anything had come loose, but she tells me that there is a sticker or something on the inside that will break and void the warranty if opened. is this true? ive looked at the pc company support information and i dont think it says anything about voiding the warrenty if i open the case, or does that go without saying? | Jimmy D (2061) | ||
| 201390 | 2003-12-18 06:13:00 | Wasn't this covered in an article (PC World?) a year or so back, when the PC Co were defending the use of glue and string, and they (Brown) made the statement that simply opening a case would not void a warranty? As to there being "an internal sticker" that would break, I seriously doubt it. Just how do you think they would get it in there, and if they have to take the case off to check, how do they do that without breaking (any unlikely) sticker... Who is your 5 year warranty with? The PC Co doesn't exist any more, as of a few months ago. |

| 201391 | 2003-12-18 06:38:00 | No they do have a plastic sticker in the older cases behind the removable front. But it was not of the "security" type that tears or rips or leaves behind something. Was able to peel it off like cellotape. Just be careful, as the PC Company is now dead, others will be doing the work on behalf of Computer Manufacturers Association. |

I Think the Computer Manufacturers Association are only covering 2 years of the warrenty and then the pc must have their sticker on it. However Check these facts. I do know there were quite a lot of posts in the forum when THE PC COmpany went down on the warrenty issue also there was an article on the web (www.pcworld.co.nz) about this also a search of the forum should provide a link to this. | 201393 | 2003-12-18 17:05:00 | Just at a guess, If you purchased a PC Co. computer from Farmers and then Farmers offered you a 5 year warranty which you also purchased then wouldnt that put the responsibility on Farmers? I am only guessing that Farmers as do others offer a 5 year warranty as part of an insurance type deal. You agree to pay xyz for any unforseeable fault/problem that may occur with the machine within 5 years. The manufacturer will have say a 1 year warranty. That means that you really only have a 4 year warranty from Farmers. Farmers then will pay a portion of this to some type of insurance policy. If it does happen and a) you make a claim or b) you remember to make a claim or c) you make a claim and you have all the documentation then Farmers should be responsible to get the unit repaired or replaced with a new comparable unit. Just a thought but I would make check with 5 year warranty policy, I am betting it wont be with the PC Co. even if they were still around. sam m |

| 201394 | 2003-12-18 20:09:00 | Thats an excellent point sam m. I know when I brought my washing machine, was offered an extended warranty for $xx . My contract would be with the retailer, under law, and it would be their responsibility. Food for thought. |
